they're just a URL redirect. you can get a .co.uk for about £4 a year i think. mine are always free with hosting...but im pretty sure they're well cheap now.

.co.uk is about £6.50 for two years I think.

I said from a Nominet member i.e. 1and1 who are charging £1.99/year IIRC (which is of course below cost).
