Hi, don't think I've posted in here before.

I was asking yesterday on the gaming peripherals forum about a new PC gaming headset. As I also need decent sound quality for general music listening and movie viewing, and have pretty much always had Sennheisers over the years, I was looking at the PC350SE.

On further investigation though, and noticing this forum and the sticky, it seems that the DT770s might be a better option.

Question is, if I go this route, which model do I need? Firstly there's the standard and the Pro - is the latter much different/better? Also there appears to be different models with different impedance. I never know how impedance works or how to match it to equipment - basically they'll be driven by a sound card (X-Fi Titanium) - what impedance is best for such a source?

Thanks for any input :)

80 Ohm, would be the better choice as the Titanium doesn't have a dedicated headphone amp.

I wouldn't bother with Sennheiser's premium headsets, as they cost more than what they are worth. The main attraction is probably the microphone, for those who don't want a separate one. If you don't mind a separate microphone, then you can do just as good if not better, for less.

Antlion Modmic is an option, but they are expensive. Being able to clamp the microphone on to the headphones is worth the price for some.

I've used a Speedlink SPES in the past, which does a good job for around £8. Zalman ZM Mic1, I have also used, which I did prefer, although the clip on mechanism is not as good, as it is not adjustable. None of them offer any kind of noise cancellation though. I don't know if the Antlion does, so maybe that is worth considering before you decide.

You won't find the premiums anywhere unless 2nd hand. Why don't you look into the HyperX Cloud? At £60 they are pretty good. They come with two sets of pads with they option of having two different sounds.

Compared to the DT 770 they are similar but less refined and spacious. The DT770 is a spacious sounding headphone but also sounds very full and rich. I'd also look into the cheaper AKG K271. It has really nice mids with good imaging.

If you go for the 770 then go for the 80ohm.

Thanks for the input. I definitely think the DT770s are the way to go and don't mind spending the money. They'll actually end up being used more for music/movie listening than for gaming so a dedicated headphone does seem to be a better way to go than a headset.

The other advantage the 770 has over many other 'phones is the close-back design as leakage drives the missus bonkers :)

Ryan, not sure what you mean about the "premiums" - are you on about the DT770 Pro as this seems to be available, sorry if I'm being thick.

Just a question of how best to do the mic side of things then - thanks for the ideas will look into those. Don't mind spending a bit more for a good solution.

Not sure if there is any DT770 classed as standard. You might have seen DT770 M. Generally, there are the Pro and Premium versions. The M, appears to be a more recent addition and looks the same as the Pro 80Ohm, except with an in-line volume control and possibly leatherette ear pads.

As Ryan said, you won't find the Premium's unless they are used, as they have been discontinued I believe. Beyerdynamic's Premium offerings generally are a little more refined than the Pro versions. Premium's cost more, but the Pro versions are often seen as more "fun".

Pro 80Ohm are good value at the moment. From what I can see, the M version costs an extra £30, which is really not worth it for the volume control.
