Looking to get my father an E-Cigarette but I have no idea what kind to get.

Any help would be appreciated.

From electroniccigarettes.co.uk

Electronic cigarette safety is a big question. Are electronic cigarettes safe? A normal cigarette contains a lot more than just nicotine. Although the smoker is just looking for a nicotine hit when smoking a cigarette, it unfortunately comes along with thousands of other chemicals. Many of these chemicals are highly dangerous to the health of the smoker and of other people who may passively inhale the smoke. Electronic cigarette safety comes from the fact that the only thing that the smoker inhales is nicotine in the form of tiny droplets. There are no other chemicals involved, making the e cigarette much safer that an ordinary cigarette.

For many people, asking the question, "Are electronic cigarettes safe?" is not just out of concern for the health of the smoker but also of those in danger of passive smoking. The ban of smoking in public places was explicitly introduced in order to protect non-smokers rather than smokers. The good news when it comes to electronic cigarette safety is that there are no harmful emissions at all from e cigarettes. The only substance released by them is harmless water vapour. There are also no noxious smells involved in using e cigarettes. So, given all of this, are electronic cigarettes safe for smokers and those around them? The answer must be a resounding yes.

So rather than ciggies you become addicted to these instead, granted they are not as harmful but both contain Nicotine.

The electroniccigarettes.co.uk quote isn't 100% true or at least a bit misleading. There are other chemical that are not nicotine in them and a lot of them we have no idea of the safety of.

We can be fairly sure the nicotine and the liquids used to make the vapour are safe enough. It is the stuff used to give them flavour that is untested to be inhaled.

Chances are it is fairly safe but we just don't know. I vape myself but I understand there are unknown risks with it. I believe the risks to be less than smoking but greater than being a non vaper.

The Vapour thread is quite large.

Anybody able to sum up the better kits to start with?

Be careful with these, they are awful.

In which way?

I've been a vapist (lol) for around 8 months and have not touched a ciggy from the start. That in itself would have been unbelievable to me in the beginning.

Everyone is different but I've settled on Smok dual coil cartomisers with Ego/Tornado Tank batteries. Much simpler to fill (than tanks), less faf (than tanks), better flavour (than anything I've tried)

Each carto is between £2.50-£3 and lasts around a week to 10 days (for me)

Important to note, vaping isn't an aid to quit smoking directly, I am addicted to my metal fags now I will admit.

But

I don't smell nearly as bad as I did, I feel great, I go to the gym 3 times a week, I don't cough up **** in the morning and most importantly (to me) I am not craving a cigarette

Hard to really say what your dad would like. Normally I'd say stay away from anything that looks like a real ciggy. They don't have long battery life between charges and you are pretty much stuck with their flavours (without a bit of modding anyway) They also have fairly poor vapour imo. Saying that I've heard a lot of older people wouldn't use anything that wasn't pretty much the ciggy style (from a seller of both)

Tanks are fairly easy to use and ok. I mostly use dual coil cartos myself now as they have better flavour. You don't get carto kits thou.

Which do you think is best for him 'ciggy' style which looks and is used pretty much like a ciggy but is fairly lacking as above or would he use something different?

In which way?

Well I got given one from a friend who didn't want it anymore as it gave him nicotine poisoning. The reason he gave for getting nicotine poising was that unlike a real cigarette, these things don't burn out. In other words you could happily sit there with this thing in your mouth for any length of time without any reason to stop.

When he told me this I thought he was being ridiculous and so I took it off his hands. It was brilliant at first. "Smoking" in doors at work and home without worrying about the smell or setting off an alarm.

The reason I packed it in was because the cartridges in the one I had were meant to be the equivalent of 20 cigarettes and I'd use one up in half a day. I think the device may have been damaged and too much was drawn when inhaling or something because when smoking, I have maybe 10 in a day at the very most. The equivalent of 40 a day just didn't seem healthy to me and also, just ster use I would get a sort of wheeze in my throat, like it had closed up slightly.

That's like saying cars are the devils work, because someone you know's friend once got knocked over. Self control and some common sense is required, much like everything else in life

Edit: Nicotine content isn't the only "bad" thing about smoking, far from it.

Yeah. Which is why I said be careful and not don't do it.

That's a common sense caveat, though, to be honest. Mind you, the marketing of most mass-market e-cigs are extremely optimistic when it comes to the cartridge life. A single cartridge of one of those is more the equivalent of 6 or 7 normal cigarettes than 20.

Still, the lack of a "finish" such as when your usual cigarette runs out is an issue, but for those who can't seem to put them down, you can always lower the nicotine strength of the liquid. If you begin to notice adverse effects or symptoms of too much nicotine, then adjust your habits or lower the strength. Common sense.

If that; I'd say lower than 5, in my experience. And that's just quantity-of-fags equivalent; I'd be amazed if the amount-of-nicotine equivalence claims are accurate, too.

Indeed :)

From these vaping threads, two things are increasingly evident:

- Most people wrongly think it's the nicotine that makes smoking an extremely harmful pastime. Clearly, those old Superman posters just wanted to scare, not educate. Who'da thunk it? ;)

- Most people are unaware that nicotine-free vaping is an easy, realistic option for those making the transition from smoker > vaper > total liberation. Or even those that don't want to let go of the physical aspect of inhaling from something you hold.

Still, the more threads on the subject, the better.

EDIT: Oh, and to answer the OP, I'd go for something like the Riva-T, also known as the Ego-T, or the 510-T kits - if a more cigarette-dimensioned device is preferred - from a decent store [Liberty Flights, for instance]. I wouldn't recommend the equivalent from Totally Wicked, as pretty much everything I've ever bought from them has been shonky [including the free TW pen they chucked in, which didn't even write :D].
