About to sell my sigma 120-300mm os

This will leavee very short for my favorite photography (wildlife)

So will need and extender as 400mm do II is out of budget.. sad times

There is a whopping difference in price between mkii and mkiii
Is it worth it?

From what I gather, only the 1.4x is worth getting. The 2x is asking too much

I have the 1.4x II and don't have any issues with it. I understand the Mk III version doesn't have any major improvement in image quality, but does have some AF improvements (particularly for the mk II super primes, 300, 400, 500 etc) which if tracking fast moving wildlife might get you more keepers.

I've also got a 2.0x II, but have only used it a couple of times and I wasn't that impressed, as quality was noticeably poorer and autofocus speed when paired to a 300 f2.8 was also much slower and more hit and miss.

Assume it's the f2.8 70-200 you have, as only the 1.4x will work with the f4 version and still retain autofocus unless you are using a 1D body. I rarely use my 1.4x with my 70-200 as I have the 300 to use when I need that focal length, but when I have it has been fine with only slightly slower autofocus speed.

its the f2.8 mkii
if the mkiii includes AF speed enhancements it will be worth it. as no doubt if i was to get anything longer it would end up on that too

unfortunately 200mm is now my longest lens after i get round to selling the 120-300

2x works fine if used right. I've found for birds don't use it to make something far away bigger, use it to make something close fill the frame better.

7DII has f8 focusing btw.

VIII extenders are a small improvement over VII in my experience.
