Hi,

I'm going to get some sp120's but unsure which to get.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-016-CS&groupid=701&catid=2331&subcat=4

the above offers more static pressure but i assume is louder.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-014-CS&groupid=701&catid=2331&subcat=4

the above is quieter but is half the static pressure.

Im thinking if i run the top ones at half speed i could achieve the same results as the second choice at full speed. But i don't know how the noise will compare or the performance.

Has anyone tried both sets or uses either these to give me some idea of what temps/noise to expect?

As both links are identical, it is hard to tell what you are comparing it to. :)

they are actually different, if you read the description of the fans and check the part numbers.

I stand corrected. :o

In a push/pull config, I would be inclined to go for the Low Noise version.
But maybe someone who actually uses this cooler could better advise you.

TBH I'd say it depends on how you're going to connect them. I have 2 SP120 performance on PWM and with the fan curve I've set they're just as quiet as the quiet edition as ordinarily they're only spinning around the same speed as the quiets. But if I stress-test/do something CPU-intensive they can and will spin beyond the capabilities of the quiets, giving that extra cooling force

Thanks for the replies.

I am inclined to go for the better performing fans incase i need that extra cooling capability, but tbh i only game and don't benchmark etc so there might not be the need.

Do you find them to be noisy at an increased spped?

When they do ramp up whilst gaming I don't really notice them because they're not generally going above 14-1500 whilst keeping my CPU in the 50-55°c range but then I guess noise levels are subject to your environment.

Beyond 1500 then yes they are noticeable, increasingly noisier as the speed increase. Mostly it's the noise of the air being forced through the rad.

At the minute due to the summer temps they're holding at 1200rpm whilst I'm browsing, low CPU usage activity and I wouldn't say they were noisy.

Those performace onces come with a small 3 pin to 3 pin extension that also reduces the voltage somewhat making them pretty much run at the same speed and noise level as the quiet editions. So you wouldnt miss out on the quiet option with the performane ones.

I bought some of the performane ones for push pull the other week although tbh I didn't rate them. They had the power no doubt but so noisy when they span up. I got some Noctua's in the end.

Push pull is not really worth the trouble and expense in my opinion. You get'll get like 2°C cooler temps, big deal. What matters is how sensitive to noise you are. My H100 is clearly audible under load (55°C +) but to be honest it's not a problem for me as my gaming etc. is louder. The only time it sounds like a jet engine is if I run an IBT bench. ;)
