Hey guys,

I'm about to move house in a few weeks and am looking for a decent fibre provider.

I've been looking predominantly at BT Infinity and ADSL24.

The +'s and -'s of each for me are as follows...

BT - £28

+ Truly unlimited (supposedly)
+ No connection fee's
+ Can pay for phone line in one go (£120)
+ Anytime call's included
+ Cheapest

- Throttling
- Throttling still in place at weekends
- 18 month contract
- Messes about with online gaming
- Appalling customer service
- It's BT!

ADSL24 - £25.90 (30gb peak) or £37.90 (60gb peak)

+ No throttling
+ Cheapest with 30gb option
+ Excellent service
+ Unlimited weekends
+ 12 month contract
+ No online gaming issues or P2P buggery.

- Peak usage limit
- More expensive if you want a less restrictive option
- Connection fees (£130 ish in total for phone line and fibre)
- More expensive phone line deal

I'm leaning towards the ADSL24 60gb option currently.

What do you guys think?

Cheers :)

With the fairly low peak time caps on the ADSL24 service you can't do a great deal of peak time downloading anyway, so probably best just to save the money and go with BT.

As a reference I tend to use around 35GB during peak hours a month just on normal browsing/youtube/gaming, and that's on a 2Mb service so I don't stream any HD. I could easily see my normal usage being over 60GB peak if I had a more capable connection.

The only real issue is gaming, how bad exactly is BT?

BT would be the best option for you. As for the peak time throttling, there are always ways around it, e.g. using a VPN.

Best option (if it's in your area) is Be Unlimited 24mbit. No throttling, download limits (I can do 600+ gig a month and it's never questioned and you can download at anytime not just "after hours") and it's a very good service. I'm sure there are some out there that have had problems but name one ISP that don't. Currently I have the 24mbit, my mother has 2 internet connections with Be and I have several friends that I've put onto their service. Non have had any issues :)

Hope this help a little...

Hey mate,

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately, BE only offer 3MB in my new area. Fibre is the only thing that's going to give me some semblance of high speeds! I really want to wait for their fibre option, but it seems to be that even though you can show your interest in it, there's no guarantee they'd make it available in your area when they do start providing it :(

Seems I'll be going for Infinity. Sadly, it seems to be the cheapest option for me. Hopefully there'll be something better in 18 months... :(

Cheers all.

I can't believe I'm actually going to say this, but have you considered Plus.net?
They do a 120GB package for £21.49/month (for first three months, this will increase to £27.99/month if you don't live in a 'low cost' area).
It is an 18 month contract and they do do some traffic shaping, but you can pay an extra £5/month to remove this.
they also have unlimited off-peak usage (midnight - 8am)
I'm not actually sure if weekends are considered off-peak.

Just something to consider.

I'd go for BT, but then again i'm with BT on infinity 2 so that would be why. I'd probably go for ADSL24 but really the peak usage isn't good enough for me and other people in the house, i'd estimate we'd get through 30GB on peak in about 5 or 6 days. If i were you i'd first consider the peak usage and if you can fit round it, all other things negliable in comparison. Gaming on BT isn't bad from my experience either although i know you probably get slightly lower pings from a non shaped service.

Thanks for the additional comments chaps.

I bit the bullet and went for BT Infinity 'Unlimited'. Hopefully I won't end up regretting it!

I didn't realise plusnet had a fibre option, haha. Seems I didn't explore all the options! :(

wow how do you guys download so much? i only have a 2mb connection lol so i guess having the extra bandwidth you would abuse it, online gaming does not really use that much anyway does it?

Your welcome mate. Hope your new internet is mint !!

Until FTTP becomes a reality isn’t Be* just going to end up as one of many BT Openreach FTTC resellers?

I’m a current customer of Be* and decided that it wasn’t worth waiting and have signed up with IDNet (two phone lines, so both connected at the moment). It’s far from unlimited, but offers everything else I need (static IP, rDNS, no traffic shaping, no port blocking).
