Which first car? Advise needed :confused:

I spent £4,750 on my first car. It was a MK1 Focus 2.0l Ghia and I kept it for 7 years. In all that time I only scraped the wing mirror in a multi-story car park.
Still, it was hardly a new or flash car, a dent isn't the end of the world.

It is a 08 plate Toyota Yaris SR 1.8L
Wanted something small but not gutless. I almost went for a Z4 as my first car, only decided against it because insurance cost twice as much and RWD with little driving experience. Lol
And yup, I damaged the front bumper couple months back (fixed, £250), it was a terrible day, long story. I also got a pot hole damage to an alloy, looking to replace it with one from eBay for £100. I do 8k miles a year.
I really do love the car but can't help looking for the next one

The Honda civic is a great little car to drive, It'll deffinatly feel a 'step up' from the fiesta as its the next size of car up. The 1.6 is a lovely engine which can be very economical, go and test drive one and you won't be disappointed.
Thanks for the reply. How is the gearstick? It is in a weird position, does it still feel good to drive with the gearstick position the way it is?
Anyone had any experiences with Mazda3? Is this a good car?
Anyone know if it is expensive to get the Honda Civic repaired if it ever breaks down?

I have limited experience with insurance but from personal experience of adding my daughter to our cars, and then buying her first car a month ago I have to wonder if buying a fiesta/focus/polo/golf/corsa is the best way to go.
My daughter has no no-claims bonus and is 21, I bought and insured her on an old £700 E36 BMW 323i (2.5) for £940 fully comp with wife and I as named drivers. For similar or less insurance she could also have a 2.2 mercedes, 2.0 vw beetle (new shape), 2.0 Passat or BMW 520i. The insurance is with Admiral who was cheapest.
Out of interest have you tried looking at some older, cheaper cars that may well do less mpg but give a more rewarding general driving experience and have less insurance costs? Bigger cars with bigger engines are not always more expensive to insure. I know its a lottery perhaps with repairs and newer is perceived as better but personal experience suggests that good german/japanese cars seem to run better for longer with lower average repair/running costs. This is of course purely a personal opinion based on the cars we have had for quite some years now within the family.
When she first started driving we put her as a named driver on our policy on our old mercedes 230E, cost us £400 extra extra each year. This was before they removed discounts for women drivers though and also had our max no claims on it, so isnt really helpful.
