Hi folks,

Got a new rig from OCUK and have successfully migrated all my programs across to it ... bar one.

SmartFTP which I bought and paid for will not jump across because they want me to upgrade to the latest version and take out a years support with them or they wont play ball! A program I've been using for 5 years and paid for is now locked out.

So I'm looking to go elsewhere. What would people recommend?

Thanks

Rik

I use FlashFXP, which I like. Its another one that you need a license for but I haven't had any problems with them.

I have always used FileZilla but I have noticed a problem with it lately. If I right click a file on the remote server and edit it in something like Notepad, notepad++ etc and save the changes, then upload back or I fully download the file to desktop edit then upload for some reason the changes aren't saved on the remote server. It's like filezilla is caching the old file as when I try WinSCP I have no problem at all.

IMO having tried all the big ones and popular ones, FireFTP cannot be beat but you do need Firefox for it. The key feature that sets it apart is the CTRL+U or right click copy URL feature where you can upload and copy the Http URL for that file and paste it somewhere, a breeze for uploading and posting images for forums etc.

Thanks guys. Will check out FileZilla.

How does it handle backing up massive websites. Eg ones with 500,00 images and thumbnails etc?

FileZilla for me too.

You can't really blame SmartFTP for not supporting a product they sold years ago which doesn't come with lifetime updates though. That's like me trying to run Office 1 on Windows 7 and demanding Microsoft send me the latest version of Office because it doesn't work :p.
