I've currently got 2x Dell S2409W screens. They've served me well, but I'm looking to get an awesome gaming monitor.

Currently have an i7 6700K, 16GB DDR4, GTX970.

Games I play now..

TF2
Company of Heroes
BF1
Rocket League
PlayerUnknown

Looking to replace one of my screens, probably 27 or 28 inch..

Go!

Is that not a TN panel? Unless one is a competitive gamer who takes their games super seriously, then I would go VA or IPS for the much superior colours personally :)

It is TN but the colours are very far from poor, they are fantastic in fact.

+1. Colours off the bat are pretty washed out but a colour profile from TFT Central will soon fix that. I think I actually used one that Twirlywoos did and it was great.

Yeah with some small corrections it transforms it. I've never owned an IPS or VA monitor to compare it with, nor an I by any means an expert with monitors, but I feel it's worth every penny of the £499 I paid. The colours are brilliant and it's very fast. It's transformed my gaming experience.

Agreed, my PG278Q Swift was great and more than good enough in the colour dept! Was responsive as hell too

Sweet. I think people are too quick to judge a TN monitor, a high end one can be very good. Biggest downfall is the viewing angles really, that's all.

Many of these monitors are massively overpriced, especially the Gsync ones...

What gets me the most is that they're just like TV's and model numbers seem to go EOL very quickly, normally about 12 months max.

That Dell monitor someone mentioned earlier is listed on Dell's website for over £800 retail and I've seen that model as cheap as £450 which would suggest to me that it might be replaced soon.

OCUK have a really good deal on a Iiyama 27in 1080p 144hz Freesync monitor, it's still listed on Iiyama's website but have seen a couple of sites list that model as EOL. Could be wrong but hey, EOL stuff is a great way to find a bargain.

Acer Predator XB271HU - 144/165hz, 1440p, IPS, G-Sync, ULMB. I'm personally considering this or getting the older version XB270HU myself.

Having owned the XB271HU I was very impressed with the display (if you get a good one) minimal backlight bleed, colors are fantastic, and 144hz from 60hz is smooth as butter.

However if you have an issue with the monitor their aftersales in my experience are pretty shoddy. They replaced the LCD panel 1 year after purchase, returned it to me with bruising. After some faffing about I got them to accept it back and replace the LCD panel again. They returned it to me without being assembled correctly, so there was severe white light bleed around the LCD panel, between the panel and the back casing. They accepted it back for repair once more, but all communication dropped. They claim to have repaired it, with none of the usual "here is the issue, this is the work we have carried out" emails. Refuse to send photos to prove it is now fault free before returning it to me. (When I say refuse to take photos, they took a photo of the top right corner of the display which was unaffected by the poor case fitment) I refused delivery and finally, after 2 months of messing around have been offered a refund.

I payed £575 for the monitor from OCUK, and if it wasn't for my experience with their warranty support, i'd say yes. Go for it, perhaps not for the £750 being asked for it at the moment, but it's definately a nice monitor.

When I get my refund i'll be in the market again for a monitor to replace the XB.

AOC AGON AG271QG 27" 2560 X 1440 IPS G-SYNC 165Hz - has good reviews and is an IPS panel.

I've used Dell Utrasharp IPS screens for as long as I can remember - I had the exact same 2 Dell Ultrasharps you're replacing but was boring and replaced them with 2 x Dell Ultrasharp U2715H.

As has been mentioned already, quality TN panel's colours are so much better than they used to be, when calibrated correctly. However, if you're use to the viewing angles and the softer sheen of an IPS panel you may find the jump to to a large TN panel difficult to adjust to. This will be especially difficult if you will using the panel for work: spread sheets, word, coding etc when not gaming.

If you're after pure gaming panel then the Dell TN is great - i specced one for friends rig and was very impressed. But, out of curiosity i played around with some spreadsheets, Word and CoffeeCup and couldn't get comfortable with the relative screen glare when compared to my Ultrasharps (All relative though - i know). Gaming however was a different experience altogether - I could still tell it was a TN panel but I wasn't bothered as this wasn't as obtrusive as when using solely as an office panel.

I mention this as you'll be swapping from 2 quality IPS panels, which you've had a number of years(?) and you may find the panel transition a bit underwhelming for desktop work - maybe. I really recommend that you try and test one in a shop - if possible- as you may prefer the compromise of an IPS Gsync - purely for the desktop/app usage if you find yourself in that environment more often than not.

But if gaming is your main intended use - then the DELL TN is a great panel and you can probably ignore most of the above :)

I think when you're spending £600 on a monitor, why not stretch £150 and get the AOC ultrawide VA 35'' gsync

i'm so struggling at the moment. I have one of the original LG 34" widescreen's. Its served me really well. Lately i been gaming quite a lot... but mainly Overwatch. This game doesn't support 21.9, so i play with black borders. So I've decided to get a new screen. At first i looked at the the new AOC GSYNC 34" but then i thought my main game is overwatch... Plus it will still be good for any motion graphics / editing work i do.

don't want to spend crazy money, im thinking Acer 27 inch Predator Wide ZeroFrame.

Any thoughts on people with a similar situation?

Is there anything coming in the next few months worth waiting for? (In the same price bracket that is as the current 1440 g-sync)

It feels like every monitor has some compromise, which I feel is pretty bad considering the cost.

The only thing that is coming next is the HDR trend which will see a price increase on monitors with HDR of quite a big chunk.

Sorry only just saw this or I would have replied sooner. Thanks for the info - appreciated. I've seen it around for £600, but waiting till after my holiday to see if OCUK drop to match. Always prefer to get any 'big' purchase from OCUK for their customer care.
