Which Game?

After DNF being an utter let down and nothing now coming out till August at the earliest I'm looking to get something cheap off of the bay contenders are

Assassin's Creed 2 - played this when it was released didn't like it so sent it back, after all the praise it got along with that of Brotherhood I'm wondering if I should give it a second chance

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood - can I skip AC2 and go straight to this?

Mass Effect - never played it before

Mass Effect 2 - can I skip the first and go straight to this?

Got both 360 and PS3 so format doesn't matter, just grabbed a copy of Mass Effect for less than £6

Okay so I got Mass Effect in the post today, got to the point where Nihilus gets shot but to be honest I haven't got a clue what I'm meant to be doing

Keep dying though which is kinda annoying

Anyone got any tips for a newcomer to Mass Effect then?

Luckily I also got AC2 in the post today as well and that is a lot easier to get into even if at this point I still dont get what all the fuss is about
