Which games benefit from 1GB graphics RAM?

I noticed Splinter Cell Double Agent installed high res textures when it found 512mb gfx ram.. That's the only game I've seen so far that actually tests for a certain amount of gfx ram and then uses it. Are there any games which explicitly or implicitly use 1GB gfx ram?

there wont be any that really look forf 1GB, as CF/SLi doesnt double availiable ram (its 2x512MB, not 1024MB), and few cards have 1GB on board.

simple answer - NONE.

remember though, quake 4 for instance doesn't NEED 512mb, it NEEDS more than 256mb. It might need 257MB, that still wouldn't fit into 256 and would need the next step up.

Mostly since the steps are so large when you double them all the time, i doubt anyone will need more than 512mb spare in a card for a long time. If you look at benchies, ATI's 256mb cards do VERY well with less memory than other cards, their compression seems quite significantly better than nvidia's, and that will have a large effect too. 1GB mem is for maybe professional 3d design work, gaming its not necessary for a while yet.

My 320 struggles when you up the res or AA's but as i run at 1360x768 not much of a problem really i can live with it until next gen as i don't play games as much now,the 640 used to pull away at higher res/Aa's and at moment there is no difference between cards with 512 and 1 gig memory in games

Crysis @ 1680x1050, all high made my 512MB 8800 GT stutter pretty badly when I used reasonable amounts of antialiasing, obviously running out of framebuffer. I didn't get this issue with my 768MB 8800 GTX.

Just my 2p.

Yes and with it's larger bandwidth helped with it more memory what i understand with the 256bit bandwidth cards is that there is no benefit of 1 gig over 512mb cards of the same make and type all they do is cost more.
one review even said about the new gx2 stated to take a larger hit in fps in crysis than the gtx and ultra because it only had 512 per core but none were playable at that res and AA's.

Even BF2 will use more then 512mb sometimes

Im not sure it'd show up in the performance ratings unless you didnt have enough main memory to serve as a texture buffer. If it starts having to load from the hard disk then obviously its going to suck.
I dont think benchmarks actually record or account for judder properly

1080p with AA can use 1gb vram generally, what res do you play at. Do not ever buy something like a 8600 GT with 1gb of DDR2

Even the GX2 suffers at high res withAA due to 2x 512 instead of 1gig. I think that a Pair of the 8800gts in sli would give a run to the gx2 at high res

i know oblivion with quarl texture pack uses around 680+mb of V ram.

there are video's showing a 2900xt 1gb (on youtube)playing oblivion at 1900res all maxed out and the guy flips back to desktop to show vram usage with rivatuner.

so there is one game that benifits from more that 512 of vram, perhaps there are others,

crysis very high comes to mind.

bringing up elder scrolls4 again oblivion default settings need to be tweaked to use more vram, not sure but i think the default is either 256 or 512 of vram,

plus other tweaks you can use for multi cpu/gfx card's along with higher textures packs ive mention above.

i would say confidentially that if the game is tweakable like, quake 4 ,oblivion and others

you could perhaps get a bit more vram usage,

i.e haven't dabbled with cysis in notepad yet..but maybe the cfg has a default setting for maximum vram usage,

if one could find the maximum for very high in cysis(rivatuner!)then perhaps a 1gb card with maybe 512 bus instead of 256 on most new cards could give a much better increase.(2900xt excluded as its old..yes i have one but thats another story)
