currently have an e8400 @ 3.6ghz, 4gb of ddr2 800 (xp tho so doesnt use the 4), abit ip35 mobo and a 620w PSU

can I just go for the best cards out or will any of the rest of the system be restricting it ? (bottlenecking)

looking to spend 300 max

What will you be using the machine for? Depending on the applications you may not need the greatest graphics card. For example the Nvidia GTX 460 s are going very cheap now and may be worth a look.

Oh, and get Windows 7 64 bit to make proper use of your RAM.

470 or 6870 at that money.
The 470 works out a little more expensive but it'll give slighly better performance.

Although depending or your res and games you play a 460 1Gb or a 6850 might be more than enough.

main use will be games, currently have an 8800gts 512 so any remotely current card will be a huge jump!
def gonna get windows 7, forgot about that actually, better quality/detail with dx 11..is it 12 now??
and yupp tis a corsair ***** psu
res will be 1920 1200, im guessing the cards suggested will cope with that res no problems!

should I be looking at spending more on the card maybe ? would really like a top gfx card this time as i have always bought mid range stuff in the past and regretted not spending that bit more!

According to my manual for the 'Point of View' GTX 470 the mini-HDMI socket does do sound but I have no tried it myself as do not have the means to do so.
