WHICH GFX!

980 looks to be the better performer. It is also a little louder and draws more power under load. It is also larger and is ugly.

If none of that bothers you then get the 980 :)

Yep 980 for me as well. The RX480 will close the gap in the future due to better driver support and DX12 performance, however the gap is quite large at the moment so how close it would get is anyones guess.

Great point however in some cases the FPS is literally a handful of frames. Surely the better support will make this up? Also, is buying a 980 which came out in 2014 really a good idea I wonder? :)

Yea 980 is the better performer! Gsync monitors do tend to cost more which is annoying but your paying for the gsync unit inside the monitor and sometimes the extra they like to charge ontop.

Wouldn't be as bad if newer monitors offered an extra HDMI and display port separate from the gysnc module that supported async so people could alternate brands. Just because nVidia dont want to support async why do the monitors have to only support one tech? Well obliviously money... but its annoying.

To be honest I've had that type of triple cooler when I had my 7990 and it wasn't THAT great at cooling. Quite "whooshy"

Rx480 all day. Similar in performance, money saved on a Freesync monitor, Dx12 is the future so the RX480 has more legs. I see no reason to choose the gtx980 apart front the 980's new discounted price. That alone should give a clue to why the RX480 is the card to buy if you want a card that will last.

The 480 is like a new bottle of wine, not so good now but lay it down for 10-20 years and who knows what it'll be capable of ;)

Op it's a no brainier get the more powerful card, that anandtech link spells it out nicely.
