Hi all

My b,day today so got some cash to splash :)

Ive decided to give my self a GPU upgade.

Im not a red or green fan boy just after best bang for buck.

I have decided to stick to a single GPU.

The only reason i went sli is because i got a really great deal on the second card.

4K is not something im gona be investing in any time soon how ever i may

invest in a 144 Hz monitor in the not to distant future.

1080p is were i game at.

Im not looking to stream.

My only stipulations are :

£280 - £290 is my absalout budget.

I will only be buying from Overclockers.co.uk

My son will be keeping the 2 gtx 570,s so selling to add to the budget is a no do.

currently my system consists of :

win 7 64bit
2 gtx 570,s sli
i5 2500k running at 4.8 ghz
8 gb ram
750 w corsair psu
Case is a CM Storm Trooper
CPU cooler is a Phanteks PH-TC14PE

Games i play are 3rd person 1st person and all racing.

All cod games and there type.

dragon age

witcher 3

Metal Gear Solid V

fifa

Thanks for reading guys :)

Wow thankyou all for all your helpfull advice.

The only umm i have is the ati driver support has it improved over the years ?

In my own experience ive had to deal with a ton issues with sli suport and could do with

a bit of stabilty in my gaming life so to speak.

Thank again guys for all your help and views. :)

I think there are enough posts here for the OP to make a decision but he hasn't posted back so probably a waste of time continuing here.

The OP has been reading and checking back every half hour.

Do i need to answer evry comment to keep the thread viable ?

Im after advice so i kinda try to listen.

I get the general view that AMD 390 seem,s to hold its own then own some.

regardless of the obove posters comments i value all of you guys advice and views.

I can assure you your not as he/she put it dealing with a waste of time.

Yeh i no fs123 just saying right !

But it's pointless this guy is going for 390 it seems, so I hope he likes it.

You couldent be more wrong my friend.

Im just as perplexed now as i was befor i started this thread.

The only real diffrence i see with both the GTX 970 & AMD r9 390 is the ram.

I dont think from what ive read and watched that the whole heat & power issues that

have plagued AMD gpu,s are relly an issue from my own perspective.

I really am just asking those that own eather or both these cards to donate a little of

there expeareances in real world terms of there pros and cons.

Allso ive decided to go with msi after some of you guys help.

Ive never used this brand befor so thankyou for the heads up.

I will hit the buy button at around 3pm tomorrow so any advice till then will be of great

help.

The whole moniter thing is very intresting to me because thats my next upgrade and it wont be 4k im sure.

Thankyou for all your advice.

To the OP, the card (Zotac) I recommended comes with a 5 year warranty which no other manufacturer offers to my knowledge.

That is a real good point and your recommendation has been noted my friend.

5 year warranty thats a real +

This time round im really looking for a single card solution.

The whole 3.5GB issue is irrelevant at 1080p on single card setups i belleve.

The whole kinda dishonest way nvidia dealt with is very relevant.

I really dont think that 4k is here yet or that we have the full hardware to implament it

this gen.

I think 1080p is were its at right now today but i dont think you need a £500 or £600

graphics card to acheve it.

The 2 card i have in mind both retail about the same.

A free game will not sway my decision.

I been with nvidia for the last 4 to 5 years ive never had any problems.

When i used ATI it was the same just alittle more toastie.

Ive also had 2 gtx 295,s in sli and thay aint cool by any standerds.

It all boils down to what im getting for my £.

The msi MSI Radeon R9 390 Gaming Edition 8192MB has a back plate + 4.5 exst mem

Has at this time better suport for dx12.

The MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming Edition has 4096MB or be it 3.5 plus 5 what ever bit,

overclocks well maybe a bit cooler and a free game.

At 1080p i dont realistically think i will ever see the benefit of 8192MB but i do think

maybe just maybe as the drivers for the r9 390 mature it could become a real star.

The GTX 970 seems a solid gpu and i really cant find a bad review i stand by what ive

said at 1080p i dont think 3.5 gb mem is a problem.

I here all the who ha about a second card for 4k but i dont belleve eather off these will

have the grunt to be a viable option.

For me this is really a stop gap for realisticly 3 years.

i hope xmas or early next year to maybe get a nice 144hz 1080p monitor.

So to be honest right now the r9 390 is £259.99 inc VAT the gtx 970 is £275.99.

Both hit what i belleve to be the price + power sweet spot for 1080p.

I need to go to bed to think this over lol.

Thankyou guys

Let me start by thanking each and every one of you for all your help and advice.

I will continue so shop at overclockers because of you.

This forum is a credit and my one stop hardware home.

Team green team red who ever you follow.

KUDOS Guys and thankyou.

Heres the card i went ahead and pulled the trigger on.

MSI R9 390 GAMING 8G

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-289-MS

And heres why.

MSI - everything ive heard is good im a new customer lets try em and see.

TWIN FROZR V - COOLER - Ive read nouthing but good things about this cooler.

8192MB GDDR5 - a couple of blobs more of the fast stuff cant really be a bad thing can it ?

Back plate - Thay not only look cool i think there very practicle.

They help to keep these big heavy cards ridged , thay help keep the card cool,

and help keep dust and outher crud off of the circuits.

A change of vendor to perhaps give the little guy a break.

Im like that its just my way so shoot me.

I think nvidia did a real number with the whole memory thing.

Im just relly suprised that the people that follow this company and give over there hard earend,

still endorse a product that is quite obviously flawed or sold useing false marketing.

I dont belleve it cripples the card but i do think theres an underlying floor thats hidden with a driver trick.

Ive used and loved nvidia products since ever but this time round im gona have to pass.

Shame on you team green.

Maybe next time round.

My new card should be here tommorow cant wait :)

You guys really deserve credit thankyou all so much for your time and patiance.

If i can do the same for you please ask.

Paul.
