Onboard often doesn't even support 1440P let alone 4K. I was surprised to find the 6700K didn't.
Can't remember now, it was a couple of years ago. I used the DVi cable that came with the monitor which worked fine when connected to a GPU. Remember being surprised it didn't work then did some research and realised it wouldn't. Maybe lack of support from mobo for DVI or something. May give it a go later as have a spare DP cable somewhere now.The HD530 used on the Intel 6700K supports upto 4K @ 60Hz. Cable or driver issue maybe?

EDIT: 6700K/Z170-E mobo only supports up to 1920x1200 over DVI-D for some odd reason, but up to 4K over HDMI. However the monitor does not support 1440P over HDMI, hence why I had to get a dedicated GPU.
So, providing OP has onboard graphics capable of 4K and a monitor that can accept it over the cable options available then probably onboard will be fine.
