I'm in need of your wisdom fellow members!

I'm finally getting my HTPC together and was wondering would a HD4850 with 512/1024Mb be sufficient to play games on a Samsung 1080p screen? Or should I look at a HD4870 with 512Mb as I've been told that would be better at 1920x1080 over the HD4850 1Gb!

Any idea on what these parts go for used nowadays as I'm not looking to buy new ATM?

Unfortunately, I've seen that access to the members market is locked to users with >250 posts and 3 months usage of the forum? So that counts me out but I wanted to ask as I'd be looking elsewhere (friends and other forums, sorry, I love the OcUK forums!).

Thanks, all pointers would be welcomed!

ye as long as youre not gonna play games like gta4 and want it uber maxed out then ye your fine. however try and geta 1gb 4870 and turn it all up!

I play C&C RA3 on a 512Mb 4850 with everything on max with no problems. As long as you're not expecting amazing visuals you should be fine running anything (though anything pre ~2007 should run on full with no problems)

Thanks folks for your replies.

I'd be happy if I can get it to match that of the PS3 and XBox360, is it possible? I have no idea on PC gaming, it's family requests!

Considering you can get a 1GB 4870 for £100, you should just get one of them, there's not much difference between that and 1GB 4850s in terms of price.

Since most console games are 720p, pretty much any graphics card from the 8series or higher nVidia will do (I have no idea about older ATi cards). Either of the cards you have mentioned will give far better graphics than either console.

The Xbox uses a Nvidia 7600 to my knowledge to a so a 4850 will be a massive improvement.
But remember most console games dont use AA and only run at 720p. Its the only reason they can reach a such a standard.
