My GPU might be dead, so trying to make plans. What's the minimum or recommended cards I should be looking at please?

Minimum would be a 5700 up to a 2070 super to cover the job. Other option would be a second hand vega.

I have this res monitor (Alienware AW3418DW) and used to have a 1080 which just about cut it on Apex Legends and gave me 50-75FPS on BF:V on Very high but newer stuff like Call of Duty it struggled and I had to drop some settings. I upgraded to an MSI Gaming Trio X 2070 Super and everything is just fine again. I'd say the 2070S is really the minimum to get sustained 60+ FPS.

There are also some good discounts on the 2070S at the moment. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pc-components/graphics-cards/nvidia/geforce-rtx-2070-super

Depends on your budget.

High end (£700-£1100+) you're looking at GTX 2080 or 2080Ti.

Mid range (£370-£500) would be GTX 2070/S or AMD 5700XT

Low end (£200-£250 for 60+FPS) GTX 1660S

Budget would be £400 max I think. I don't actually play enough to warrant the high end stuff.

I changed to one of these lovely 3440x1440 ultra-wide monitors.

I had a 980ti, which was ace at 1080p (and even 1440p), but just couldn't push a decent 3440x1440 fps without turning off more and more bells and whistles, so I changed to a 2070S. In all honesty, I would suggest a 2070S or 5700XT as a minimum. Sure, lower card will "work" but you will have to lower the detail settings - but, what's the point running 3440x1400 resolution if you're not wanting most/all the eye-candy?!?

For ref, I've been on Division 2 a little recently and I get over 100fps on high and approx 70-80 on ultra with a 2700x cpu.

If £400 is your max budget, would be a 5700XT or 2070 Super slightly over your budget. With that said, should offer a solid exprience. I use a single 1080Ti in most instances and can get a solid experience paired with 3440 x 1440 panel. Do need to make some smart tweaks to demanding settings in demanding games, but on the whole works well. Say this as a 1080Ti and 2070S is ballpark similar performance if hardwares unboxed according to their 39 game benchmarks: https://youtu.be/wHGHKIb3iG4

So yeah, 2070S if you can, will be able to keep most eye candy settings on while getting solid FPS for most the part. Just need to make some smart tweaks in some games now and then.

Spend less and be really underwhelmed by what you're getting your set up or get a 2070s. Which for me would be the minimum.

The monitor is Freesync compatible, I've read the latest Nvidia cards can do this. Anyone run Nvidia and Freesync? Any issues?

I am driving a 3440x1440 100Hz G-Sync monitor with a 1080ti, I would not go any lower than this. I usually have all settings set at second highest value. My second PC has a regular 1440p 165Hz monitor and the 1080ti in that usually pushes a good 20% more fps.
