Which GPU to pair with a i7 4770?

so the day has come, my trusty r9 290 is failing, it has started to artifact in games, only slightly but it’s noticeable.

I have a i7 4770 I bought 2nd hand earlier this year and I intend to use it for the next couple of years, it’s a great cpu and blows my old fx8350 away. I’m just wondering what to pair it with? I game on a 60hz 1080p TV which in its self wouldn’t require much, but mainly play VR on an Oculus Rift.

I suppose it would be easier if I listed the games I mostly play, and intend on playing.
RUST
DayZ
BF5
CoD Blops 5
Cyberpunk
Star Citizen
Red Dead Redemption 2 (should it appear on PC)
Onward (vr)
Pavlov (vr)
Echo Combat (vr)
Space Junkies (vr)
Stormland (vr)
Defector (vr)

I don’t upgrade my PC’s that much, I’ll use it for about 4,5 years before I even think upgrading.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and any input is greatly welcomed.

A used 1070ti should see the system out nicely until you need a full upgrade.
Decently priced on MM as well, due to miners selling their stock

I'm just wondering if it's worth checking the temps/cleaning the 290 first before you buy something else, or is it definitely on its last legs? :)

It’s defenitly failing mate, I have cleaned it and put fresh paste on, no difference.

I’m eyeing up a the used market at the moment

Depends on how long you want it to last, 1080p is not that demanding so it's hard to say really, anything from a GTX1060 to a GTX1080 depending on your budget.

The i7 is fine and not any sort of limiting factor. 1080p 60hz is not demanding, though VR naturally is a lot more, so really something like a GTX1070 would be a solid choice - and a very nice upgrade on your 290.

A GTX1060 6GB is more of a sideways move and doesn't come cheap all things considered....especially when a 2nd hand 290 goes for around £100.

ocd any card out now will be fine.there still a pretty decent gaming cpu. oc if you can.enjoy.only problem now is you just in the bad time to buy era.

You could also try underclocking the memory clock and/or core clock by a little bit. Sure you might lose 1-2 fps, but it might fix the artefact issue.

The problem is there's not real good alternative to get as a replacement, as the 290 is still pretty much eat through almost everything for 1080p 60fps, and whilst cards like RX580 and 1060 6GB are faster by a little bit, I don't you can really tell for 1080p.

The 290 series cards aged as well as like the 8800GTX back in the days, in terms of value for money/bang for bucks (the same cannot be said about the GTX780/780Ti/970).

£150 ish for a GTX 1060 6GB off ebay, it's definitely faster, as much as 30% vs a R9 290X

Just a question of if it will be enough for future titles.

For 1080p a 1060 6GB would be fine but i would go with something a bit more powerful. Get the fastest card you can so you can dial up the Super Sampling sliders in your games to make them a bit sharper.

Thanks for all your input guys, it’s much appreciated, Im currently watching a vega64, 1070ti and 1080 on eBay.

I don’t feel as though a 1060 is enough of an upgrade from the 290, sadly dialling back the clock on the card hasn’t fixed the artifacting, strangely I don’t actaully see it whilst in VR, only on the TV in VR games and while playing flat games

This might sound silly, but any chance it is the HDMI cable rather than the card became faulty? Have you tried a different cable connecting to the TV, or connecting to a different display?

I haven’t even thought of that, I’ll give that a go after work, thanks for suggestion

Yea golden rule of fault-finding is to consider all possibilities.

If problem still persist after using a different cable, you should try testing using a different output port on the graphic card, and different input port on your current TV (and also on a different display as we if you have one). The reason I suggested try using a different display is to rule out it is not caused by something that may or may not have happen during the processing part of your TV, cause the last thing you want is to find out the problem is still there after changing graphic card and it turns out to be a fault with the TV.

To put simply, you would ideally test using connection settings different from what you are currently using: different cable, different output port on the graphic card, different input port on the TV (as well as another display if you have one).

I’ll do all the above later, I have used a different TV and it did articfact, but I used the same HDMI cable, I can’t believe I didn’t even think about that!

Strangely I want the graphics card to fail, it gives me an excuse to get another, the GPU market is so dam stale I haven’t had any reason to upgrade from my 290.

Off topic, what would consider the max price of the following cards pre owned?
1070ti
Vega64
1080

I feel these 3 will give my rig longevity with my CPU

I was on previously a 290 (unlocked to 290x) as well. I remember was waiting to see how the GTX1080 was gonna be, and then it launched at a high £600+, and I decided it I'd much rather drop that money on a new monitor (the one in my sign) instead. Surprisingly the 290x handled the 3440x1440 res for the games that I play well enough (abut with some setting turned down slightly) thanks to Freesync.

I recently upgrade to the Vega64, and despite obviously it doesn't have enough grunt for 4K, I am can still play Monster Hunter World on my 4K TV at 3200x1800 res with 50fps+which is good enough for me.
