Hi guys,

Not new to pc's or the forum but would like you opinion.

My new current setup

2x Dell 2515H
I7 4790k
8 GB of corsair vengeance
250Gb Samsung Evo
3Tb WD green

My initial thought as my monitors are 1440p @ 60hz going for a balls to the wall GPU would be pointless due to screen tearing, As this isn't just a gaming machine hence my choice of IPS

The weapon of choice would be a GTX 970 more than enough for 1080P gaming but not insane with 1440p.

I'm wondering if my choice is just slightly under par for my setup or should I be looking at a 980.

I do prefer NVidia Gpu's but won't write off the red team.

What do you guys think. Am I over thinking the situation or stick with the rule of thumb of max GPU.

The 970 will be fine as long as you don't mind turning down a few settings at 1440, however if you are comfortable paying the extra then of course the 980 is faster. As far as AMD are concerned the 390x is the competition and stacks up well against the 980 in the benchmarks i've seen. Whichever you decide you can't really go wrong. Hope this helps.

I would like to see the benefits at 1440p, based on your reply the 980 or 390x would be the better choice.

Opens up the doors to that evga AIO cooled card or possibly a shinny released 390x

Cheers

Just needed someone to tip the scales for me:D

:)At 1440 the 390x and 980 are basically level pegging, so whichever takes your fancy really. One thing in favour of 390x is 8GB vram which is something to consider but on the flip side it uses more power and will possibly run a touch hotter(but not a lot in either case). Have a look at some of the reviews and then make a choice based on the games you are most likely to play, as i said before though you won't be disappointed whichever you choose.

Yes I agree the 980ti is a great card, just cant justify buying one.. I really think the 980 or 390x is the correct choice.

I do like to play a few FPS based games MMO's

BF4
Arma 3
Dayz
Fifa
GTA5 when I get around to purchasing it.

The card doesn't have to be over kill just enough to max settings around the 45-60 frame rate. just not a fan of screen tearing

Arma 3 is apparently heavily Cpu bound and even people with high end set-ups are struggling with that afaik, the others you shouldn't have any issues with though.
