My son has a Athlon 64 x2 Dual core 4000 2.1Ghz processor PC, with 1.5GB of DDR2 Ram, and an existing Nvidia GeForce 7300LE graphics card (256MB). Motherboard is an Asus M2N8-VMX.

He plays World of Warcraft a lot, and find the gameplay very 'jerky', not at allsmooth, frame rate of around 30fps. I play too on another more powerful PC and framerate is 60fps. His monitor is a 19" Widescreen at 1440x900 resolution. Though we will upgrade this to a 20-22" in the next month also, so needs bearing in mind.

So I'm looking at upgrading the graphics card for him for Christmas, can you please advise something suitable? Budget is no more than £100, and the PC runs Windows Vista Home Premium. Advice truly appreciated.

well tbh its not, but you wont get a current gen 512mb card for circa £100. if anything, stretch to a 512mb version of the 3850

If all he play is WOW then 256mb is enough.

There's the 2900GT as well for £99 but it's highly recommended that you add the extra tenner for the 3850. It's worth it.

Why not this one

Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Cheaper and with 512mb, is this better or worse than a 256mb 3850 recommended above for the monitor res he will use?

Even with the deficit in memory on the 3850's part, the 3850 will still out perform the X1950 Pro in pretty much every scenario you want to put it in...
