Hi all,,

I recently bought a new PC - Gigabyte X58AUD3R motherboard with an i7 930 cpu ... and a rubbish graphics card (Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4350)...

As you could imagine crysis is running like a bag of bob. What graphics card would I need to upgrade to to get smooooooth fps and decent graphics (everything high) ??? or is that not possible ? :)

5770, everything high here except the AA, think that's at 4x. Smooth as butter :)

wow - that much of a difference between my card and yours? I would have thought that given my cpu is pretty lethal i would at least get a decent frame rate on all medium settings and 1024 res.... its a lot more playable than on high which is basically a slide show (think 10 fps) but it still judders!

I haven't compared the specs of my card against ssomething like the 5770 yet though...

you will probably have to check that you have a psu with enough wattage to cope with whatever card you get also. many pre built systems with low powered gfx cards come with very low powered psu's also

I dont buy prebuilt - I build mine :p

But yeah good point so thanks for pointing it out - I have a 520 Corsair Mod. atm so I will look out for whichever gfx card to get - trouble is deciding which gfx to get now ! think i might go for that 150 quid 5770 xfx one .

That PSU could run a 5870 if needed. Personally I'd say stump up the extra for a 5850 over the 5770 depending on what res you game at. I recently played through crysis and warhead on my 5870 i7 system and although it was smooth 99% of the time there are still parts of the game which nail the FPS, albiet always in the first game instead of the "sequel" (due to dodgy coding in the first lol)

heh sorry! usually great cpus and bad gpus mean pre built! (and you said you bought it rather than built)

The guy above me is right - 5770 is fine for most games but 5850 would be better for crysis and better for future games if you want later, depending on resolution. If you want to game at 1080 deffinitly 5850, the 5870 doesnt offer much of a performance boost and pobably not worth it unles you have to have the best like me heheh.

Yeah your psu is fine for anything (radeon at least) up to 5870.

thanks guys ... nice to know i can save on the psu, I have a soft spot for Corsair stuff and its only 6 months old anyway!

Erm, gfx wise...

Well i have a 28 inch hanspree monitor (from here) which as im sure you'll be aware the native res for it is 1920... can you point me in the right direction with this in mind?

imo that resolution could warrant the 5870 but a 5850 will be still good :)

Never ever skimp on the PSU. It's the cornerstone of your PC build. Get an underpowered or "value" PSU and at best you'll have to replace it when you upgrade any components, at worst it can destroy your system.

Yeah this really unless you want to try your hand at overclocking a 5850 to 5870 levels and saving yourself about £80. I myself bought a 5870 due to it having more shaders and that I didn't have to overclock it to run at the same speed lol. (yes im that lazy)

Hes got a corsair PSU, thats hardly a crap brand when it comes to PSU's. I've got a 550W corsair in my system atm and it powers an i7 system with a 5870 with headroom still. Very good make and he doesn't have anything to worry about in this regard

or over clock the 5870 knowing at stock it still is grate :)
but im the sort of person who likes to buy the best lol...

High or very high settings? (gamer/enthusiast) My 5770 with everything on very high, no AA, 1650 x 1080 gets around 20 fps on the start of the ambush level of warhead. 4x AA knocks about another 5fps off. 1280 x 960 is much better getting around 28fps.

Unless you have 5770s in crossfire i think you're telling porkies.

I have recently started playing AvP3 in DX11 and the shadows, lighting and effects are amazing. Also runs at 60fps+ fps most of the time.

Metro 2033 is also a good game with great graphics but will toast most graphics cards in max settings with AA & AF and DX11. I run in very high, DX11 (just tessellation) 1650 x 1080 and it works ok

tbh them frame rates are playable imo
but from another thread a lot of people need 40+ and most want 60fps
to get that with very high is a big task even with high end stuff.
it depends what you need as a min fps in game.
