g/f has a desktop with amd 3000 cpu, 1gb of ram and an ati 9200 graphics card...which would be the best card upgrade. She likes the odd game or two but i think the card she has only runs directx 8..???

HMMM i bet its 1 gig of DDR ram too....tbh you could get any graphics card, but you need a good base on the CPU and ram first. Unfortuatley that also means a new mobo. I'd say get a x1650....maybe try the x1800 or x1950. She has a pci-e port right?

But as i was saying, you should try to upgrade things gradually at a steady rate. So then you wont have to suddenly buy whole new comps or mobo's, cpu's and ram at the same time.

cheers....im not sure if its agp or pcie...im gonna have to open up the case n have a look...dont know what the motherboard is...not hooked up at the moment hoping to find some space for hers...lol

opened the case and this is what i found...asus A7N8X-LA motherboard, socket A ,nforce2, 250W power supply,1gb ddr memory and a 9200 agp graphics card...

Frankly if I were you I would not sink any more cash into that system unless you can get things basiclly for free. The funny part is you can actually get semi decent prices by selling that stuff off. You can really spend a fairly small investment to buy a new system that not only would game better but just be faster in day to day browsing, etc.

You could pick up a AMD setup for dirt cheap that would probably blow her mind compared to what she is running and cover most of it by selling the old parts off. I have done it before and actually just got some pretty good cash for a old sock A board, cpu and have sold off a couple old AGP cards. You can even find some decent cases from companies like Antec that have a decent PSU in it for cheap. One of the issues of trying to buy a AGP card or DDR ram (new)is that will cost ya more that buying the same flavor of DDR2 ram or a PCIx card. There is used but you have to be careful and really also really look at just what the price is compared to newer tech. I have seen used older items sell for more than new tech.

I would be happy to recommend some cheap options if that would be a consideration so just lemme know but that route would be my recommendation.

what a delema, moneys abit tight at the moment, thought id get a agp card for peanuts but some of the prices are mad .....

I'd go for that if i were you - great warranty and a good price for a decent agp card. You should see an improvement.

To put it into context my early graphics card history roughly went:

9200 > 9600XT (Pretty decent boost)
9600XT > 9800PRO (A big improvement)
9800PRO > X850XT (Another big improvement)
X850XT > 6800Ultra (A bit of a side step but it supported SM3 which was useful for Doom3 and similar)

The GT should slot in just below the X850 and Ultra but will offer a big increase in performance compared to the 9200 you're using.

out of curiosity... is there a modern agp card that would go with the set up like the 7600 or 8600 just purely for warrenty purposes..????

7600 is a great budget performer. Just depends what you have available to spend.

BFG offer a 10 year warranty so the 6800gt you can get for £25 should still be covered i'd imagine?

me again... checked to see what power i needed to run the cards mentioned and they all say 350w or above, as the pc only has 250w is it the case i need a more powerfull psu or will the 6600gt be ok ....????
