Hello, I.m rebuilding my stand-by pc and need a new graphics card, but dont know which to get.
basic specs of pc are:-

Asus M3A79-T mobo,
AMD Phenom 2 940 cpu
4Gb Ram
Running Linux/Win XP

Dont want to go overboard with the graphics, so any recommendations what the best one would be.
Not really into gaming, most demanding would be Flight Sim.

Thanks,

Gibbo

An R7 250 (£70) is good for budget gaming performance. Or there's second hand (e.g. GTX 560 or an HD 6770, HD 7750). Cards below the R7 250 are more for media systems than games.

Thanks teppic.
What I didnt want to do was to over spec the grapics card and then find the cpu was the bottle-neck. Upgrading the cpu is not a realistic proposition.
I'm on my way down to Shropshire tomorrow, so I'll pop in and get a card.

Your CPU will be fine for all but the most powerful graphic cards, and even then, you'd still see an improvement over lesser cards just not as much you you'd see with a more modern CPU.

I used a first gen 965 (pretty similar to a 940 - most 940s can be OCd to 965 levels and beyond) with a radeon 6950 (roughly equivalent to radeon 7850) and then switched to an i7, and in practical terms there was no noticeable difference in graphic performance.

Remember, when articles benchmark for differences between CPUs, they choose graphic settings which massively exaggerate the differences, because otherwise the CPUs would be packed too close together in performance.
