Which GTX 560Ti? Trying to find decent ground between "noise" and "performance".

[Short version: After a GTX560Ti with good performance and low fan noise but not sure which i would go for. Willing to sacrifice a little of either if it means the other gets an improvement. Power usage and temperatures aren't of much matter, although the lower the better for obvious reasons.]

I made a topic 2 weeks back requesting advice on what GPU to purchase for my system in which i received some very helpful information, so thank you to the community. The 3 options were the GTX 460, 480, or 560Ti. The 460 series ran fairly cool and had low noise but lacked the performance i was after, where-as the 480 series had the performance i wanted yet sacrificed nice temperatures and quiet fans. In the end i decided to with the 560Ti series as it wasn't far behind the 480s but kept the positives of the 460s.

A few days of research later and i thought i had come across a winner. The Sparkle Calibre x560 had great performance, low power usage, reasonable temperatures, and was one of (if not) the best cards when it came to fan noise under high load. The only problem? It doesn't seem to exist anymore and so i cannot buy it. Naturally my thoughts turned to the "second best" GTX 560Ti but i honestly cannot see which one is worth going for. There are so many brand names flying about and different versions of cards that it's making my head spin: Take the Sparkle away and everything else is hard to sort through.

The MSI Twin FrozR is said to have amazing build quality and so-so audio under high-load but suffers in the performance department. It runs very cool so it has over-clocking potential but would the performance really increase that much? Even then, would the fan noise still be the same or would it increase to a noticeable level? I've seen the Gigabyte SOC and it's brilliant performance but it apparently suffers a great deal on the fan noise end, not to mention i've seen a few issues arise with the factory-clocked cards (pushed a bit too far, so i've heard). The Asus is apparently in the middle for audible airflow and performance, which seems like a sensible option if i cannot find a better alternative. The Palit Sonic 1gb didn't look that good to me but apparently there is a 2gb version out, although i've no idea how decent it is. In fact, there are tons of other versions out there which i have no clue about: Zotac, KFA2, Inno3D, PNY, Gainward, and even then there are different types like 1gb, 2gb, OC, Super OC, etc. Could make a guy lose his mind trying to fathom all of that data!

I am really lost on this one, would appreciate the help. The reason i am so touchy about high-load fan noise is not for myself but others around me. The Desktop is situated in an area where a couple of people regularly socialise, watch TV, etc. I don't want to be gaming or rendering/designing something and have the fan audio become so much that it becomes a background annoyance, but at the same time i don't wish to sacrifice a ton of performance if the noise difference is negligible.

Budget is £190-250, which should cover every GTX 560Ti out there.

EDIT: Had to remove one of the brand names i mentioned because apparently it was filtered out and replaced with asterisks... O_o

Thank you for the replies, these forums are brilliant for speedy and quality posts. :)

I'd like to start by answering tommy's question. I don't have a preference in name and i'm not a follower of one or the other, but i've noticed a couple of games have some artefact problems when it comes to AMD cards. In fact, one of the games i am currently playing and am addicted to (Monday Night Combat) has a running problem with the 5/6xxx series and black artefacts show up on some explosions and particle clouds. 2 months on and they cannot find a fix for it either, so couple that with some other games having similar problems and i'm ruling out AMD for the time being.

I've seen good things about the Gigabyte's performance but i've also heard that the factory OC seems to be a little weird for some people. Not sure why or how, never investigated. I've also heard that it's got some high fan audio compared to the rest of the 560 range, although i imagine it is still fairly quiet. Not sure what to make of this card if i'm honest. The MSI Twin FrozR took my fancy before i read up on review sites and found that it lacks on the performance front. Temperatures are great so it looks to be good for over-clocking, meaning it can probably be a really good performer when given a tweak, i just don't know how that will affect the default fan noise. It may be ok now but if it's going to crank up another 5-10db then i will probably pass on it. Like the Gigabyte, not sure what to make of this card either.

The KFA2 cards intrigue me. They are pretty cheap which brings forth both positive (low price for good performance?) and negative (cheap for a reason?) thoughts. I will have to look into them further because those noise levels are really something!

Oh my, this isn't getting any easier! Unless something crops up before Tuesday afternoon i will probably go ahead and order the MSI Twin FrozR, seeing as it's well priced and has room for some decent over-clocking with its low temperatures. The only cards i've not yet investigated are the Gainward Phantom 2gb and the KFA2 series, but i will get onto that after some sleep (1:35am already? Time flies too quick!) :)

Then it's decided, the MSI Twin FrozR GTX 560Ti it is! Shame the offer on OCUK ended today, could have saved an extra £6. Will check out some other reliable retailers for prices.

Thanks everyone. :)

It does run a lot cooler, true, although noise plays a huge factor in what card i can choose (as mentioned in initial post) which is why i went for the 560Ti series. If fan audio wasn't an issue then i would be looking at the 480s, but i'm afraid they are not an option at the present time. :(

One last thing before i go and order (should have asked this earlier): Is there any reason a Asus P5Q Pro Turbo Motherboard wouldn't work with this GPU? I can't find a problem myself but thought i would double-check with the professionals here.

As you say, sound/heat aside i would go for it. But sound/heat are important factors for me so the 560 is my only option. For everyone else the 480 might sound good, and it did to me too, but myself and others around me won't be able to stand the noise of them. I've heard and seen these cards in person (my friend owns one 480) and it sounds like a hair-dryer when playing games.

Thus, the 560 it is. :)
