Please gentlefolk, knowing nothing of nvidia products, can your very knowledgeable minds inform me which card to go for. It is for my grandson who lives to game. His rig consists X99 RIVE board, Intel 5960x 16gb ram Corsair Platimum with a 4k monitor. Thanking you advance.

I know OP specifically asked about 980, and while not really intending on turning this thread into another battlefield, but considering he mentioned 4K gaming for his grandson, isn't the £600 4GB GTX980 looks a bit draft (a bit is probably an understatement) when that budget can get two of these 8GB 290x and still with change in the pocket?

If I recall correctly, the a single 980 isn't really that much faster than a single 290x, unlike at 1920 res. Though I guess it would be down to what PSU does his grandson's system has as well.

Don't you know NVIDIA don't do price v performance in the enthusiast category ;)

Very sound advice, psu permitting of course.

Well i know, you know and so do many others that at 4k if you want to play at 60fps and with settings ramped up to max you are gonna want a multi card setup with more than 4gb of vram.Personally yes i would go with 2/3 8gb 290x but as he asked about Nvidia products i gave him my slightly biased recommendation :)
It would be intresting to know what card/s hes been using before and what settings he likes to play at.

Thank you very much for your responses, helpful, he wanted a Titan. I love him but not that much. I wish i knew what direction to take, seeing how things can get out of hand between fans of both camps. I do not want to het into that. Would 2x GTX 980`s be any good? Thanks again.

At 4k resolution, vram of 4gb on the 980's could be a limiting factor. Particularly with newer games. With the 290 8gb cards, your set on the vram count, but the trade off is that they use more power and can run a bit warmer. But if case cooling is good, and using a quality psu of 850w ono. They are incredibly good value for money.

Considering that it is a Intel 5960x system, I think at least a quality (e.g. SuperFlower...not Corsair) 1000W PSU would be a safer bet...

If i was you mate give OCUK a call tomorrow and have a chat with them it will save you having to read through any amd vs nvidia crap that goes on lol. i've always found them to be very honest and straight forward when it come to advice ;)

I would lean towards the 980 over the 290X, even at 4K. To be honest, neither is ideal, and by the time 4K matures, we'll be several GPU generations down the line. I wouldn't in all honestly recommend 4K to anyone at this moment in time. Sure you can run it, and resolve some of the issues in a handful of games that are pushing 4GB VRAM. As time goes on, more games will demand more VRAM, but anyone who thinks they will get years of use from a 290X 8GB Crossfire setup is kidding themselves. GPU grunt (or lack thereof) will rear its ugly head before you get a chance to start using all that VRAM on a regular basis. 1440p is the sweet-spot right now, and offers the most longevity. It's a cast iron guarantee that anyone building a 4K rig right now is going to be spending the VAST majority of their considerable budget on a monitor and GPUs, yet these will be the FIRST things you'll want to upgrade in the next year or so. Madness.
