I was going to drop the money on a 3gb but not for now. I'm only running a single 1080p monitor at the moment and if I ever go for multi i'll put money on a 3gb for 1.5/3gb SLI.

So which 1.5gb card should I go for? What's the noise and cooling like on them all.

The Asus with the 3 slot is out the question becuase I am intending to go SLI eventually.

With SLI you will only get 1.5 GB
The refe design is extremely quiet so i think it should be fine whichever one you go for. I'd get the gainward good edition that is currently the cheapest.

OH. I'm not too sure about that. I meant that if you have 2 1.5GB card, you will only get 1.5GB - not 3GB.
TBH, i have no idea which cards' RAM it would use.
I'm sure you could find a 3GB 580 fairly cheap on the by or something and buy that now and anoher later.
As for the cooler, The ref design is silent - i think its your best opytion

Oh so if you SLI 2 difference VRAM sizes it only gives you the lowest?

Correct!
The cards don't share their memory so the 3gb card would be limited to 1.5gb.

Go for which ever has the better warranty or brand that interests you.
Reference design does the job perfectly and is not as noisy as previous generations.

I'm quite sure that if you give the 3gb vram card as GPU1 then it allows you 3gb but the other cards 1.5gb isn't used.

Think i'm going to go for the Gainward GOOD edition.

Not sure if i'll ever game with surround but hopefully I can sli with a 3gb as GPU1 will work

Had nothing but problems with the 5850 twin frozrs.
2 card with extreme cap whine.
And the 55% fan speed is a tad annoying. If I can pay Less for just as quiet and for something with thermal managed fan control then I will :D

Gainward GTX 580 "Good Edition" is one seriously UGLY graphics card...hope you dont have a windowed case!!! ;)
yeh it won't win any beauty contests but its a good fast card.
