So advance apologies for not doing enough research of my own, but I'm sure many of you have.
I'm looking for a quiet, fast GTX680.
I'm not sure if I will upgrade as I already have GTX580, but I can sell it at a decent price so the upgrade will hopefully be less than 100 squids for me.
I also game at 1920x1200 (27" screen), but after the GPU upgrade I might consider stepping up to the more exotic 2500x1600 resolutions...
I am also not interested in SLI or AMD.
The priorities are:
noiseless at idle, quiet at gaming
cheap
fast, perhaps a factory OC or sth...

not going to happen tbh. (bold bit)

The 680 is a bit of a rip off card, I'd suggest you get a 670 instead as they perform similarly for a lot less.

Quiet 670:

^ absolutely, the 680 is a waste of money. that whole price bracket (680/7970 ghz) is kinda dumb.

i had a gigabyte 7970 for a little bit and while it was silent up to 50%, it could probably kill small animals at 100% (same cooler on the 670). having said that the temps were good so you'll likely not need much mroe than 50% anyway. it has ram cooling and proper vrm cooling, with a full-size pcb so i send cleeecooo. gigabyte!

Like Cleee and Porkpie, I would be going for a 670 also. The difference in the 670 and 680 is so small, it can't warrant the extra £100 for the 680.

I did a bit of research into this and i agree with the others, the 670 is far better bang for buck.

Just google some reviews, there's very little in it between a 680 and 670 some of the OC'd 670's even beat stock 680's out the box.

Is there even a notable difference in performance between a 580 and a 670 anyway, especially for the 150-200 upgrade cost?

Yes. I went from a highly overclocked 480 to a WF 670 and its quite a step up. Also a handy half gig of extra vRAM (in most cases). The 670 is a great card IMO.

Is it worth it.... it depends! ;) If your an enthusiast and like to run max settings / 120fps for a 120Hz screen then go for it. If you are happy with high settings @ 1080p on a 60Hz screen then there is no point.

IMO you need a 120Hz or a high res screen to make it worthwhile.

Yes there is. To be fair I got very lucky on the timing of my 580 sale and was looking at getting a 680 but managed to hold off and get a 670 on launch day instead... never underestimate the stupidity of 2nd hand buyers.

No way will it cost 200 quid to upgrade from a 580 to 670, even now, 100 tops I'd say... for me it was basically break even.

the extra VRAM solves a lot of problems and FPS wise it's about an extra 30% and a bit more when fully overclocked - a single 670 can run BF3@1080 on full settings and never dip below 60FPS, where as a 580 even with a decent OC dips to 50 and even in to 40's, which is annoying

I'm glad to hear it is such a boost in performance, i was worried I had committed to selling my 580 without really getting a significant upgrade.

I'm selling my 580 to a friend for 150, which I think is a little under what I could get for it but it's worth it instead of dealing with the potential hassle of selling second hand goods on the internets. No way you'd get anything above 200 for a 580 now though, so an upgrade to a 670 is in the 150-180 price mark.

Nonetheless, I'm going to do it without question :)
