Which Headset?

Hello,

I am currently looking to replace my sennheiser gaming headset as its starting to look a bit ropey (inside plastic pad starting to fall out, not as comfortable as it used to be etc etc.)

I am looking for a headset that will be used for nothing but gaming and must have built in mic for vent, ts2 etc. Have got an auzentech prelude soundcard so any headset that can handle the quality the card chucks out would be handy as well.

Was thinking of either the

SpeedLink Medusa SL-8793 5.1 ProGamer Edition
Sennheiser 161's
Creative fatality fanboy headset

Anyone have experience of all the above and could single one out above the rest, or can anyone recommend any others?

I have also noticed the new razer piranhas but have so far been unable to find a source in the UK that sell it, has anyone had any experience of these, should i wait to see if overclockers get them in?

Thanks in advance xxx

I personally wouldn't buy anything with the fatality name... he'll put his name to anything - regardless of the quality - just look at that Zalman case with his name for one example.

Creative do tend to make high quality speakers/headphones - but I still wouldn't.

5.1 in a set of headphones is just a gimmick and you will sacrifice quality in order to get the gimmick.

If I were you - I would buy the Sennheisers :)

No idea, but it puts me off no end, but I don't play games much so surroundsound is of little benefit to me. Stereo is much better for music.

If audiophile quality is not your main priority go for a low impedence set of conventional cans. Spend no more than you need to. At the low price end of the market Sennheiser provides the most choices and probably the best build quality for the price.

Sorry if this offends some gamers who've bought these things, but the simple fact is that so called surround sound headphones are over priced toys. If your game and soundcard output surround sound you'll get surround sound out of your phones as long as they're not mono phones. The extra benefits of so called surround sound headphones over conventional phones is marginal at best. The price you pay in terms of audio quality, build quality, comfort and robustness for this marginal benefit makes surround sound headphones a very bad buy indeed.

I found the medusa speed link 5.1 headphones not to bad tbh and at under 50 quid cant really moan.:D

That's great enjoy them, but the fact remains that they are toys built by toymakers for gamers. Nothing wrong with that as long as they're not confused with headphones designed and built for reasonable quality sound. The so-called 5.1 feature on these 'phones is a gimmick with at best marginal benefits in games.

Yeap spot on. I've seen some cans on iheadphone's that are over the £100 mark which just makes me laugh.

Btw Leperello - did you get my email fella?

While gaming over the last 5 years I've tested and used various headphones and the combo of my xfi and Medusas are by far the best I've used. I've tried out loads of more expensive non 5.1 headsets and for FPS gaming none were anywhere near as good. I agree you can get better sound quality from a good pair of senns but for gaming I get whole load from having the gimmick. For anything other than FPS's just get a nice set of logitech 5.1 speakers but if you play lots of FPSs like I do then get the medusa or some steelseries.
