Which Hoya filters?

Hi all. Well, i've just had my nice new Canon L 17-40mm arrive today and i'm looking to buy some filters to put on it. My main question is this: There are loads of types of different Hoya UV filters, and i'm looking to buy one of the better ones, but there seem to be about three versions of the HMC coated filters; just the HMC, the 'HMC Pro' and 'the HMC Pro-1' and I would like it if osmeone could explain what the differences are and what one is worth buying and why it's worth spending the extra cash on the better ones.

Also, if anyone could suggest some other filters I would need that would be great.

Thanks.

Hoya HMC is fine, its what I have. tbh, its more about protecting the lens than actually removing UV. If you really want to spash out, get B&W filters, they are cheap on Ebay.

p.s. Nice lens !!!! I am torn whether to get that next or a 70-200 F4

Ok, cheers.

Regards to the lenses, I suppose it depends on which lenses you own already, it is a very nice lens, very light, and the picture qiality is great.

I only got the kit, 28-105, and the nifty fifty.

The plan is to get 17-40L, 50/1.4, 70-200 2.8 IS, 24-70.

I will have them, eventually :p

Lol, yeah, I think my next L lens will be the 70-200mm f/2.8, really need it for my trip to China next year.

Think about the F4 IS seriously, the IS is worth 3 stops and will get you photos the 2.8 (non IS) will miss.

If you need to use the Lens on full frame you are going to need a Pro-1 filter. The pro 1 filter is thinner and will not vignette as much when shooting at 17 on full frame. I don't see much difference between S-HMC and Pro-1 in terms of image quality, but the Pro-1 seems to attract more dust then the S-HMC.

Wouldnt it be better getting the lens when your out there? or is that what you mean. Thats what i was going to do when i go to tokyo.

Well, response to all the questions about the lens: I had never realised that you could buy a Canon f/4 IS version of the 70-200mm, I only thought the IS was only avialbe on the f/2.8 one. Oh, and I wont be able to buy one when i'm out there because I'm going with my school and tbh I won't have any time to go shopping unfortunately.

The F4 IS came out not long ago, and its price is about £400 more than the non IS. So you are really paying for the IS, it practially double the price of the regular F4.

When I was at school I could never afford kit like that anyway! Do kids get paid to attend nowadays or something?!
