Hey guys, just upgraded from a Q6600 to a free I5 2400, specified the board needed to be compatible with the I7 so once i have some more cash can get the I7 (z77)- i now have the cash needed :)

It seems i have a choice of these

Intel Core i7-2700K 3.50GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM

Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM

The 2nd option is a tad more expensive, but no reviews... from a goolge it looks like the 1ST option is a better clocker.

My main use is gaming and studying, studying is using multiple VMWare boxes & GNS3 but with all this running even the 2400 is only showing 40% use..

I'm leaning towards the 2nd option purely as that's whats in stock but don't want to waste £250!

Any pointers?

2nd option is more futureproof and moer powerful clock for clock.

I'd always buy newer stuff rather than old. Are you changing your mobo as well?

Nah iv'e only had the mobo 2 weeks! come into some cash i didn't expect was gona run the 2400 for 3-4 months then upgrade it...

But figure may as well get early christmas gift :)

Ok so the 2nd option it is then.. :)

Wouldn't say a 3770k is a bad clocker, depending on what chip you get, i'm lucky to get a good one, 4.5Ghz at 1.17v and when pushed at full load it hovers around high 60s, low 70s, I can see this chip can easy go higher, but for me its a sweetspot for perf/temps.

I'd pick 3770k out of that list.

Option 3

sell the mobo and the 2400 and grab yourself a 4820 for the same money as a 3770 and a new 2011 board from the sale of the old board and cpu

Does the 4820 blow the 3770k away? is there a huge difference?

Was thinking once the I7 is in id be ok for 18months or so... Got I7, 16GB ram ATI 7950 thought that would handle most things thrown at it...

Plus i wont have the messing about trying to sell then... although i suppose im just delaying it for 18 months... hmm

If you get the 3770K, you'd be happy for years to come ;) It's a great processor. In my opinion, there is not much difference between a 4820 and it would not be worth buying a new motherboard for it. There are a few reviews/forums with people comparing them two :)

the 4820 is soldered rather than pasted, that alone is reason enough, the quad memory channels and true x16 performance with sli is just a bonus

Don't buy stuff you won't need.

Quad channel memory and X16 Sli channels make no difference. Benchmarks reflect this.

The 3770k is very close to 4820. Clocked, maybe better.

Waste of money imo.

Only reason you'd go down the quad x79 route, is if down the line you want to sell that CPU and spend another £400 on a 4930k 6Core, then you got to ask yourself the question, Do you want/need a 6core intel CPU?

Save your self some cash an get the 3770K for the extra cash going for the 4820.

The performance vs price favor the 3770K better as you all ready have the mobo an ram.

The new intels are out next year so doing a complete new build this late is a waste of cash.

Im not saying the next Intels are going to be better before any one jumps in with that ;) as no one knows yet.

Agree here.
Its a decent processor indeed. It will compete for a good time yet and if you can sell the i5 2400 then its a cheap and sensible upgrade ........ with dividends. ;)

another vote for the 3770k here, newer tech, runs slightly hotter but can still clock as high. say you have a 3770k @ 4.6ghz, well the 2700k would have to clock to 4.8ghz to match that performance.. and the 3770k uses less juice.

Yea i went with that in the end. 1st bootup i clocked it up to 4.6GHZ with the H80 running at 30C idle & non intense tasks. Then up to 68C playing BF4 for a few hours on Ultra settings.

Very very happy :)

Good going, got yourself a good chip it seems, i've gotten 4.6GHz running it under 1.2v, but i'm happy for it to sit at 4.5GHz, Runs that little bit cooler (I'm a freak when it comes to keeping my stuff cool).

If I upgrade my cooler (Using a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, fantastic cheap cooler) I'll see how far I can push the chip, i'm positive Mine can push towards 5GHz, just haven't got the balls for it yet on its current cooling :D

Fine clock you got :p we'll done. Sure you'll get everything you'll need from it mate.
