i need some help deciding which CPU to get either the 2.66ghz for £100 or the 3ghz presler for £180 , I want to do some serious overclocking but i have orded 2GB DDR2 Samsung PC4200 on the description it says

"Samsung PC4200 DDR2 have been causing quite a stir due to the ultra-high FSB speeds capable by using this memory "

Does any body know if this is true ? becasue with the 2,66ghz version i know you dont need very good ram as get it to 200fsb and its 4ghz but i dont know how far i will need to overclock this samsung ram to get the 3ghz to a similar speed? so can any body help me out :)

You're pretty much going to have to get PC4200 RAM anyway as the only motherboards that support that processor are DDR2.

And remember that the 805 is a Smithfield core, not a Presler and also remember that there was no appreciable performance benefit from the dual cores over the HT's until the Preslers turned up.

I reckon you'll end up with a massive overclock that runs very hot and performs poorly.

As for the Samsung RAM, it's fine for 266FSB so with the 3GHz Presler can theoretically be overclocked to 3997MHz without overclocking the RAM at all.

But remember that you have to keep it cool to get those overclocks stable.

the memory will be fine, my corsair value, 533 (PC4200) is sitting here @ 300 1:1 @ 4,4,4,12 with 2.1v up it.

most ddr2 clock very nicely, you can get higher clocks with looser timings and less volts.

the memory should be more than adequate.

perfomance at over 4Ghz from a Presler is very good

just for the gaming records.

a 4.2Ghz presler with an xtx @ default clocks

3dmark 01 = 36k
3dmark 03 = 21.4k
3dmark 05 = 11.6k
3dmark 06 = 6.7k

I have the same exact Ram. I can only get 275@1:1 with auto volts for the Ram. What mobo do you have and did you have to raise the vcore to achieve this as I cannot get past 4.4Ghz without raising the vcore.

the v-dimm is set to 2.1v

and the vcore is upped to 1.4v (does fluctuate down to 1.32v on heavy load)

is that what your asking me? :p

i am talking about the P5WD2 Premium board, but i do have a few others kicking around, (see other threads)

Thanks thats the same mobo as me. I cannot go beyond 275 @ 1:1 for some reason. Think it must be the volts as I have that set to Auto. The vcore is supposed to fluctuate unless you disable the bios options for TM2 + Speedstep. Will see if raising the volts allows me to get 5Ghz on air! All I need is a 263FSB and the Ram is rated for 266. Think not increasing the volts has held me back big time.

Cheers

good luck with all that, let us know how it goes :)
Can now get the same as you which is 1200 FSB @ 4-4-4-12 Volts on Auto Volts + Vcore default 1.4V max.

This gives a CPU clock speed of only 4.2Ghz. Can push it a little further so that it tops out around 4.5Ghz on air cooling still without raising the Vcore which is rather good methinks.

Now does 5077 in 3D Mark06 compared to 4750 on stock so may as well leave on stock speeds for now as already more than fast enough for any game out there.

Go for the 920 (2.8Ghz) Pressler for £180. Should get to 4Ghz on decent air with decent motherboard & PSU, and contrary to previous speculation is very fast across the board.
