right i have a bit of a dilema being a game happy student used to a lovely 2mb connection.... im moving back to my parents house in about 5 days as the contract for this house is up and the new landlord wont let us move in for a bit. now they still have a .....56k dial up!!!! with BT and are paying something liek 10-15£ a month for the 24/7 thing where u get like 150 hours a month (i cant remember exact details) now ive been trying to convince them (mum is up for it but dad takes more persuading) to step up to broardband.....

problem though, we live down in the gower (for those who know where that is in south wales) and its basically a house in the middle of nowhere on a hill with the nearest neighbour a mile away :p, we did try to get isdn about 6 years ago for my dads work but the line quality wasnt good enough and just kept dropping the conn. now they say that we can get broardband now.

so should we get them to send out and engineer to our house and say, we would like to get broard band with you but we want to see if we can actually get decent speeds first?

if we cant get BB down at our house another alternative iove been thinking of is this wireless BB from "3" and other companies for liek £10 a month.... now what speeds is this and what restrictions are there? any good for gaming? and i suppose would have to check we get signal in the house first :p

any input about these topics would be greatly appreciated (as i dont even have a modem in my pc!!! :p )

Also check the thinkbroadband forums.

o2 are a good bet though. As said above, use samknows.com to check you can get them (LLU).

edit: Looking at your house location though, you might be a bit screwed :/

lol yea i live miles away from anything, but aparently my mum said some one had phoned them from bt asking if they wanted BB and said we could get upto 6meg..... could be lying tho :p

uhh well theres an exchange in my village but when i clicked on it showing the area it covers highlighted in blue im about 200 yards from it.... :( im sure we must still be in it though, because i typed in the house name and post code and said BT ADSL and the max one were available.

Samknows givs you your distance to the exchange (straight line) and you can usually safely times this by 1.5-2 for an assumption (guess) of your actual line length.

well if i do that then im about 2.5km away

also it says adsl available ~5.5Mbps

Provided you have a good line that is about the speed you'd see on adsl

Here's a chart for you.

right well im on my slow as **** 56k bt dial up... wooo :( woe is me, just tried CS:S....1000+ ping, (althought i sware it only used to be 200ish with my 56k like 4 years ago! ) but anywho finially convincing parents to get broardband and my dad has been lookiong into it, we are currently on a bt line and live far out of town so no chance of cable, adsl is the only choice really (apart from 3G mobile net but it's thats not good from some of my mates who tried it) and well my dad has been looking into tiscalli and they seem to offer a good deal for upto 8meg unlimited and free phone calls for cheaper than what we are paying with bt....

but ive heard mixed things about them, how reliable are they? customer service and repair good? whats the net like for gaming?

we live pretty close to the exchange of our village,

should we just stick with bt and get BB with them? try and get more stuff for free? or recommend any good services with phone too?

Tiscali will be worse than dial up...trust me.

They are cheap for a reason, if u do no downloading and ** not a heavy gamer (they really really really do not like them) then they are fine though.

If you are you'll get put onto a "naughty" list/ip range where your speeds will be about 28k and no sites will load at all...
