Hey guys, So my gf would like an ipad and the obvious problem is do i go down the ipad 2 route or fork out an extra £70 quid for the 'new' one. Really need to order it today if possible so time is against me.

so its battery life vs new screen and camera i think?

What would you do?

Cheers

I got an ipad 2

The ipad 3 is bigger it's heavier, runs hotter, it takes a lot longer to charge and the retina screen means it's basically the same in terms of speed, I have read reports that it's actually slower than ipad 2 so the ipad 2 will likely last as long with iOS updates before apple gimp it with iOS 7. I got a refurbish one from apple refurb it came as new and was 290.

All the cons and none of the pro's.

Cons as above ...yes

Pro's:

Its got a A5 chip which when they utilize it will be faster than the iPad2.

The screen alone is stunning!!!! Its the reason you would spend an extra 70 quid alone. Seeing is beliving and when people say they cant see the difference they really mean ...i wish i had on!

If she does a lot of web browsing, book reading forum reading etc then ipad 3 is where its at!

The camera's are way better, its using the iPhone 4 camera's. Its very nice when taking video's...some say well why would you take an ipad out to take pics, its just about having it just in case is what i say.

What? The iPad 2 uses the A5, the iPad 3 uses the A5X. Both have the same CPU, while the iPad 3 has the same GPU cores, just four of them as opposed to two. CPU performance will be exactly the same.

To the OP, what are the requirements? Are you on a strict budget? The iPad 3 isn't all upsides; it takes far longer to charge due to its bigger battery, and with the 32nm A5 chip now trickling into the market, the iPad 2 battery life is just about to get even better.

Depends on your priorities really, but personally I'd go for the iPad 2. The resolution difference looses priority as you increase the display size.

iPad 2 has the same chip, the new ipad has a better graphics chip but most of that is used to compensate for retina

Depends if you are happy spending an eternity charging it and getting less battery life the new iPad 2's last 12 hours vs new ipads 9ish. There are definatly reasons to avoid the new ipad imo.

The iPad had 256MB's of memory, the iPad 2 has 512MB and the new iPad has 1GB of memory (RAM, not storage)

My original iPad started to be memory limited on some webpages, Safari would crash out to the desktop and apps would do the same. Whilst the iPad2 might be ok for now, for that reason alone I would jump straight to the new iPad and future proof yourself somewhat.

Sorry my bad yes the ipad 2 has the A5...but i look at it like this...would you go for a iPhone 3GS or iPhone4? Honestly the screen is boss! Its worth it just for the screen man!

But as I said before, no matter how much someone argues it, the increased resolution doesn't make as much of a difference as you increase the display size. The 3GS desperately needed a better display, because it was genuinely unreadable viewing zoomed out PDFs. With the iPad 2 you will always be looking at content at either close to, or at the resolution that the page was created for, and text will always be bigger on webpages.

Not saying that the display is pointless, but for a lot of people, it doesn't provide enough of a difference to be worth the extra cash.

i don't really think she would not the screen res tbh and its doughtful that she will be playing loads of games etc so maybe the 2 is better.. arrgh its so difficult.. I recon i will buy from JL to get the 2 year warranty - unless someone's seen some cheap un's about.

Extra few quid now, make extra few quid when u sell it.

People need their eyes tested if cant see much difference when viewing Internet text

I would, and did, go for the latest version. I use it a lot for reading on the Kindle App so thought it would be worth going for the better screen.

I went from an iPad 1 to iPad 3. Yes the speed bump would have been the same if i'd gone to the iPad 2 but screen sharpness and image is far cleaner and crisper on the iPad 3. No question about it. Like most things in life, it comes down to money. If you can afford the iPad 3 then get it, if not then get the iPad 2. Simple as that. You won't be unhappy with either.

If I was to buy today and either didn't own an iPad or had an iPad 1, I would get the New iPad.

If you own already an iPad 2 then I would be more inclined to skip the newer model.

But honestly the opinions here will likely lean towards the enthusiast and may not be the same niche/target as your GF as far as her requirements and intended uses goes.
