If it was me, i'd go for the three. If i went for the 2 id just keep wondering why on earth i didnt get the latest model at the time.

I'd try and get a cheap iPad 2,4 or wait for the 32nm iPad 3

Get the new ipad, the screen alone is worth it.
That battery life bench is constant 3d gaming, I doubt the ops wife will be doing that. I have the 3 and I am amazed how long the battery life is with a mixture of usage. It does take quite a while to charge up I'll give you that but the screen is very sharp, perfect for web browsing, book reading etc. I had the same dilemma, 2 or 3 but decided future proofing and the screen were enough to edge it. When I was first looking I went into a store and compared each side by side, the 3's screen is obviously better and I knew I would be constantly thinking I should have chosen it if I got the 2.
Let's face it, the iPad3 is all about the screen. If you want the screen then get the 3, if you're not fussed then the 2 is a better bet.
As for whether you want the screen, it's all down to what you do. If you're primarily using apps then, whilst the screen is nice, most apps have been optimised to work fine on the iPad2 screen too so everything is large enough to read comfortably, the 3 just looks a bit "nicer".
If, however, you're doing a lot of reading, either of websites or books or magazines, then the screen is worth every penny. You can read more easily without zooming or panning as much, it's less fatiguing on the eyes when reading small type and web-browsing in portrait mode without zooming at all becomes easy when, on many sites, it was virtually impossible before.

Well its been ordered, i caved in and got the new ipad. There was a deal on hduk and i just went for it.. So its winging its way to me - hopefully before her birthday! She better be impressed with it now.
