Which iPod?!

My 4 year old 3G 40GB iPod has finally given up the ghost (one night's charge = 30 minutes of play time, even with a brand new battery...) so I'm in dire need of a new one! Was thinking of having a friend bring a brand new 6G 160GB model back from the States; Apple's refurbished site has them at the equivalent of £160, which is a good deal! But I'm only just now filling my 40GB iPod, so I feel 160GB might be too much right now...

The other option to consider is that I use RockBox, the replacement operating system for iPod, simply because it lets me do SO much more with my player. (It gives me total control over my playlist creation - which I love! - and it also plays all my files by directory, without having to use iTunes - another thing I love, as my files are all perfectly ordered by location, but not so brilliantly by tag!)

Anyway, afaik RockBox only works with iPods up to 5.5G, so no luck with the new 6G 'Classic' kind that I would be looking to buy... So the sensible option might be to spend less money and buy like an 80GB 5.5G iPod video....? Unless anyone can tell me any massive differences between these and the new 6G iPod 'Classic'?

Or does anybody have another view on my situation?

To be honest it sounds like you've made your mind up. I don't mind iTunes and can't stand Rockbox, so I wouldn't be looking to buy last-gen hardware, but it's your choice.

This would probably be better off in the sound central forum or whatever it's called, where hundreds of nerds will try and get you to buy the current flavour of the week from China that has a desktop hard drive in with threads full of photos of them gaffed onto DIY headphone amps.

On second thoughts it's better off in here.

Do any other companies offer decent sized (80gb+) music players other than apple?

I know the 2gb-8gb has a lot of choice, but does the higher end?
