which is best for htpc

Cant say which is best but i have the x4 620 and i think it was a great purchase £70 at the time 3.ghz o/c full load at 38c and that on a old AM2 mobo

Either would be more then adequate for an HTPC. Match with a 785G board and in for a good solid HTPC system.

Remember that the older 780G can do Bluray playback with Sempron Processor so neither chip will exactly hold you back.

Personally would have the dual core as I would imagine less heat output, power requirement which should be a consideratioon for a HTPC in the living room.

Normally you'd be right, however the 620 athlon has a much lower TDP than the 550 Phenom, the athlons are designed to run nice and cool. Youre right about pairing with the 785G chipset, one of the best integrated gfx xolutions there is.
Ive written a thread on choosing your components, here, the 3rd section/post is HTPC specific, you may find slightly useful

x4 620 TDP is still rated at 95w, AMD in the wisdom are using deneb and disableing the L3 so its luck of the draw if you get a propus or deneb at the moment

thanks was going to stick it on a 785g board aswell,so they will be fine for 1080p films and say later down the line if i want to add a card say a 4890 will be fine for gaming aswell

p.s nice thread that 95thrifles,will really help a lot of people

this is what i wass going to be using

Hopefully the Athlon II X4 600e will be out any day soon, that's Quad Core that only uses 45W. If you can wait a while, I'd get one of those, as it's much more suitable for a HTPC.

that would be better,so it is any day now for it then if so will just hang on for a while

You could get a cheap Sempron 140 to tide you over, unlock the extra core and you have a very good cpu that runs at 45W. Keep you going until the 600e's arrive and you can probably sell it for about the same as you bought it.

cheers lanz but really want to get something that once in will last a while and play all my blu-ray films,as for games i can just add a card at a later date for that, thought i would have had it built by now and still cant decide what to go for

well i went for the AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 620 2.60GHz ,all parts coming tomorrow so will give me somthing to do over the weekend
