which is best for me ryzen 1950x vs i7 8700k

ok so on my computer i normally run

game
music (itunes)
DVD or youtube
will normally have steam, origin and oculus all open at the same time

sometimes may run scans in the background.

or

now and again i use photo shop with similar programs running in the background

so would the 16core be more useful or would the i7 run all those things at once easily?

the 1950x would be overkill for that by a long way. I'd say that you would likely be able to get away with something like a 1600 without issue for a whole heap less money, though the 8700k is a little faster in games.

Truth is depending on the game, most quad core cpus would handle that.

8700k is the fastest chip for gaming. if that's your main use then best option.

Anything from 4 core + 8 threads upwards would handle that with ease - I don't really see the need for something like the 1950x but something like the 1700(X) should be a serious consideration.

Personally if I was upgrading now I'd want something with more than 6 cores 12 threads even though the 8700K can grab the headlines for performance in some aspects.

There is no reason why they shouldn't be out already so who knows, BTW i take it you're after a H or B370? if so why an 8700K? you cannot overclock on H and B series Intel motherboards.

If you are looking at the Ryzen side you can overclock on B series boards but not on A series.

Edit, K on Intel mean's overclockable, those without the K are not, Ryzen CPU's are ALL overclockable.

The Core i7 8700 non-K has dropped closer to £250 at many retailers,so that would probably be a better choice if the OP is not overclocking,although it locks out RAM above 2666MHZ though.

While during those years, up until a few weeks ago i was an exclusive Intel + nVidia user.... :rolleyes:

Get a grip its always a good idea to wait for new products to come out if they are only a couple of weeks away.

Not from Intel, at least up until now they just renamed the same thing with a clock bump and jack the price up.

Its not just me who thinks Ryzen are better all rounders than anything Intel had to offer upto that point Intel clearly thought the same because after 10 years of rehashing 4 core CPU's suddenly they are behaving like they are playing catchup to AMD.

its not just you no, there are a few regulars

however at the end of the day it good the sector is finally moving. in other news the 7900 is still beasting along quite happily, the money i spent on it long since forgotten.

haha and you even reposted that image of yours! love it, however look at the single thread scores and realise that as most things don't use so many cores.. well. check the 3dmark cpu scores.

Are you going to go for some Bootable NVMe raid? oh wait not only is your CPU slower than AMD's equivilent, and runs hotter you also have to pay Intel another £200 for NVMe Raid, and ECC compatible memory? no... again not on Intel's HEDT, so what do you have? single core performance, on a £1000 HEDT 10 core.

You know, i might go NVMe raid, ready and waiting on my £75 AM4 board

erm, single core performance, and as such better performance until the max number of cores on the 7900x is reached. which is 10/20 threads. how many apps use more than that? and ones that i use are pretty much none. have a look at the results in that thread specifically the cpu score.

And no i have no desire to have ecc memory, i don't run mission critical processes. my boot performance is fine on a regular ssd! I would change to the 7980xe or whatever its called but for my use its not better than what i have so for the same reason, im happy with the 79. and hopefully you are with your 6 core goodness, slow 6 core goodness

CPU's are like Porsches, you have the Boxter because you can't afford the 911.

I can't afford the 1800X, its not that i don't need 8 cores or more.
