Currently running Microsoft Security Essentials V2 beta. I have in the past used Kaspersky Internet Security. Just got my yearly free 3pc key and downloaded Kaspersky Internet Security 2011.

My question is this, which is best out of these two?

ie uses mroe resources and has best detection rates in your experience?

Only thing putting me off Kaspersky is accessing some functions can be a bit confusing but haven't tried 2011 edition yet so maybe they ahve been addressed?

Meh, in before the lock. The AV sticky is getting a bit unwieldy.

Having not tried those specific versions I can only comment on my general experience with both.

Kaspersky will have a higher detection rate due to the fact it's more comprehensive and aggressive. The trade off is the odd false positive and it's caused some issues with the OS for me. It's the most annoying of the two.

MSE will generally stay out of your way and only alert you if something is wrong. It's not perfect but if you want something that will melt into the background but still provide a decent layer of protection MSE is a good choice.

If you want to try a third option I've become a great fan of the Avast free edition. It's not resource hungry or some monstrosity that wants to take control of your whole system (like some Symantec products I could mention). It doesn't nag you every five seconds, but does give you a nice lady who tells you when your virus definitions have been updated (for piece of mind).

Whether its as secure as the two you mention is hard for me to quantify, but I do run something like Panda activescan every now and again to double check and also do a full system scan from my linux dual boot as well and have never found a virus so I'm gussing Avast is doing its job.
