My Brother is looking to buy a new graphics card and can't decide which to buy out of the GTX 970 or the 290X. He currently has a GTX 670. Will he see a big difference in gaming or will he be wasting his money?

'Which is best' Prepare for war!!

Both are great cards it depends on your budget and what games he plays and what resolution he plays or wants to play at in the future tbh.

At the moment he plays at 1920 x 1080. I have told him the card he has is good enough.

Ample if he does upgrade, can run two if he fancied* :D

* Assuming the motherboard and case can take it! :p

He will see a big difference on the fps counter, and at highest details, But tbh that's it, At high settings most games look similar to full ultra. It depends whether he wants full ultra settings with mostly over 60fps at 1080p resolution.

each card is about twice as fast.

I've currently got a 290x 8gb, but previously had a 970. Both cards will perform roughly the same unless you're running fraps and/or benchies then you'll see the 970 should/will be slightly better. The 970 runs VERY quietly and cooler but is a bit more expensive. The 290 needs a beefier psu to run it and it does run hotter. The only reason I changed to a 290 from to a 970 is a matter of principal over the Nvidia issue with Vram and nothing else.
My choice would be the 970 based on performance.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will tell him they are about the same performance wise.

He will be made up knowing they will be twice as fast as what he has :)
