Since his friend is new to PC's as the Op has stated, l pretty much doubt that he will be overclocking either card.
From my experience, if a mate of yours asks for your advice but at the same time has an opinion of which brand to get don't try to change his mind. If something goes wrong with the component you advice him to purchase he will be busting your balls because YOU recommended him that product.

Im the PC expert to him, he doesnt know how to build pc's etc. But i said id put it all in and things.
