I didn't know they were rationing contrast.

Must be tough times.

30,000:1 will be the dynamic contrast ratio. A pretty meaningless number.

See here for information about dynamic contrast:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrast_ratio

So the higher the number before the :1 the better??? I will be playing games a lot on the monitor so need something that keeps up with my 5850 g-card.

It would probably help some people relate to the monitors a bit more if you put the all-important model numbers in. Saves them having to do extra Googling, right? ;) The specification tells you very little about the monitor, surprisingly enough. You have highlighted this very nicely with the 'dynamic contrast' ratios.

The only real use for those figures is that it allows sad little know-it-alls like me to identify the monitor in question if a model number is not given. The value is quoted as 30,000 and LG mentions an 'F-Engine'. '30,000' is actually quite a low (read: sensible) dynamic contrast figure, telling me that it's a CCFL backlit monitor.... Ah enough of the mystic PCM2 crap. It's an LG W2246S isn't it?

Before I go any further - what are your uses. Your requirements.

May I ask how much each of these will cost you to buy?

As mentioned by Strife - the LG is higher res. However, the HannsG is 16:10 aspect ratio (LG is 16:9) - so the HannsG has a larger screen area and more height (the LG is wider). Also, it looks like the LG is VGA only - while the HannsG also has a DVI connection.

If you are buying new and the HannsG isn't on some crazy deal, then tbh I wouldn't buy either of these. I'd go for this one instead (or find a second hand Dell 2209WA). Also, this Samsung is a good price on the daily deal.

That is exactly what I was getting at. I couldn't work out if the OP needed a matte bezel and what his intended uses were. He didn't give enough to go on really. Using my extensive intuition I'd say he's after a cheap monitor for gaming - but I find it strange that he is looking at two models (around the £100-£110 mark) with matte bezels that are not all that popular. The BenQ is a good proposition and seems to present value above and beyond the others available. Many happy users and for the price I don't blame them.

yeah gaming monitor. And you were right it was that LG one. Think I'm going to look at some BenQ ones

Also, is this a LCD screen with LED backlight?
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-034-BQ&groupid=17&catid=949&subcat=

and does it come with a DVI cable? because it says people have been buying then with it... LOL

Aye, its an LED backlit LCD (edge lit). Not that it really matters, the edge-lit led backlight doesn't aid the image quality - but it will save you some money with lower power usage compared to a CCFL backlit monitor.

It doesn't look like it comes with a DVI cable - I would suggest buying this if you don't already have one.

Good to see you don't mind a bit of gloss. Don't you want to spend a little extra for a nice black DVI cable? I don't like cream coloured cables for black peripherals myself. ;) 2m is out of stock but the 3m is there.
Let us know how you find it.
