Hi :)

I'm not all that well up on TV's - I know the basics but with the number of models out there, its confusing...

Our old TV died just the other day - it was a 32" Sony, a big beast of a TV that weighed just under several tonnes...

Looking to replace it and figured LCD is the way to go - preferably 32"+, ideally 40" or thereabouts, not too restricted by budget, but within reason.

Last I looked, the Sony V series was considered quite good, if not the best - is this still the case or has it been superceeded by the X series?

What alternatives are there from other manufacturers?

The screen is used for SD TV watching, streaming content and working from a PC, DVD's etc. Everything basically.

Help me please! :)

the KDL40W2000 is usually classed as the best, though some suffer from backlight bleed. Dunno if anything supercedes it yet as a better LCD.

Only one....its big brother X series..
But obviously its a premium price hike..

Hi, There no other tv's better than the sony bravia's (W series And X ) i sell them at work and there the best outta the lot. On an upscaling dvd player to 1080p. Excellent !!! :P I soooo Want one

Jay!

Check out my thread (here) and look at some pics for yourself

I don't have the "clouding" issue, and it is quite simply a stunning display when you play HD on it!!

its a strange one. the w is slightly better with hidef stuff due to the better 'real' panel contrast (yes, better than the x!) but the x is better with sd stuff because of its better scaler.

i dont care about the sd stuff, thats why i have the 40w:)

watch out for the new Sony D series

it was announced in a press event last week and will be replacing the V series. The D series is 10 bit colour (all previous sony panels are 8 bit colour ) and its also 100hz. Sony have showcased the previous v series with some horizontal scrolling across a dock full of boats. On the old series the names are unreadable, on the new D series they are perfectly clear.

ETA should be in the next month or two.

Hmm interesting. How do the samsungs compare to the sony range in terms of image quality etc?

Also, I thought refresh rate didn't matter as much with LCDs, the response time was more important?

Just got the Sony KDL-52X2000, its a corker.
I still need to tweak the settings, but looking surprisingly good on the better encoded Freeview channels and with upscaled DVD's from the PC.

Now thinking carefully about the next move, XBox-360 or PS3.

As has been described in the monitor section many times - refresh on lcd shouldnt make any difference.

Saying that I wouldnt be surprised if there is some "jiggery-pokery" being done somewhere else and its just being called "100hz (equivelant)"

If its as amazing as stated above (panning the boats) then it should be excellent ....of course its not necessarily the 100hz doing this but either way :D

OP you should also look at rear projection sets also - cheaper than LCD's, can produce just as good pictures (better in some circumstances) and potentially still be less cumbersome than your old CRT used to be

apparently there is quite a visible difference from the demonstrations shown at the sony press event

whether this is purely down to the TV being 100hz or not is up for speculation. like yourself, im betting theres some image processing going on other than it just being at 100hz.

very similar

they both use the same panels. cant recall the name of the company that produces them, but sony and samsung both part own it, and plough a lot of money into the plant they use

however allthough the panel is the same, the TV is not. Look at the sony W series. Samsungs 1080P counterpart has a quite different feature set apart from core panel features like contrast ratio etc.. Biggest point, the current 1080P samsung panel has no freeview tuner, sonys W series does.

So they are similar, but not the same.
