Which is faster??

Im trying to help a mate with an upgrade, he is running an old dell P4 desktop at the moment and wants to do some gaming. The only problem is he has given me a budget of £300
Im looking at spending no more than £100 on the GPU, so Im thinking either a 4850 or I have just seen a 3850 X2 as well. I know its an older card, but will the extra gpu core give him better performance than the newer 4850??

Any other suggestions welcome as this budget is a nightmare...

so far I have come up with

Phenom X2 550 BE (3.1Ghz)
Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD3P AMD 790X Socket AM2+
OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 Reaper

I have a case and psu he can use and Im hoping that I 'might' be able to use AMD overdrive and ACC to unlock extra cores if Im lucky

but from the 2, i would go for the 4850, as multiGPU issues will not have to be taken into account.
