Hi there,

Which is more important when it comes to web hosting:

Ping of server

or

Geographical Location of server?

Thanks.

For instance, is it better to have the server in the us and have a lower ping, or is it better to have the server in the uk and have a higher ping

If a UK server has a higher ping than a US server then there are serious network issues as ping time should increase nearly in parallel to distance (in a perfect world) - further to go = greater ping :)

It's also easier to own a server in the UK, simply for support reasons. Same working hours as you when you call them, cheaper rates, and of course in the event that you ever have to work on the server onsite.

Anyone living in the UK whi buys US colo is a nutter :p

Also quite a lot of the US companies have 24/7 support simply because of their sheer size and the fact that they serve a global market. Also www.dialwise.co.uk and similar are 1p/min  :)

Unless they want a free holiday.

"Boss, server seems a little sluggish.. off to the states to sort it!"

I am under practically the same dilemma but to do with my choice of webhosts for my website.

I am going for a cheap host as the site is not terribly important to me, but obviously i want the best for the money.

I have a choice between a US host with a 30ms ping or a UK host with a 80-90ms ping.

Which should I choise.

I think you have those mixed up :D

Unless you'll really be using eleventy terabytes a month there's no extra value in paying for high numbers because it's cheaper - quality not quantity

Budget = as cheap as possible.
Needs = PhP, mysql, 50mb space (should do), subdomain

Its only a site for testing PHP.

The only reason i asked which server i should use is becasue they were the same price.

Yeah XAMPP is great. I am using it now, its just i want it live so i can get other people to test it.

Thanks for your assistance.

EDIT: and sorry for hijacking your thread.

You should be able to find a UK host with a sub 30ms ping without a problem?
