Which is more important, a fast HDD (10,000 RPM) or more RAM ?
Also would a faster HDD affect in-game performance or just improve loading times ?

A faster HDD would improve load times, but wouldn't affect in game performance at all.

With RAM being so cheap nowadays, there's no reason not to have at least 2GB, which is enough for most games, and will only cost ~£30
If you're running Vista, then 4GB will serve you well in resource hungry games.
