Hi all - need some help.

Just setting up my first Conroe setup which is as follows:

E6300 (1.86ghz, 2M/1066mhz/06, SL9SA Malay ), Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P, Corsair CM2X1024-6400C4 (2x1gb)

So far I have assembled many PC's upto Pentium 4 (478) with no problems but this one has got me stumped.

The only parts there are on the mobo are the processor, Corsair Memory, Cooling fan and a speaker. When I switch everything on to test it, the fan on the power supply starts, the hard disk start and the fan on the cooler "twitches" and then everything stops. No beeps at any time, a few seconds later it goes through the same process a second time and will keep doing the same continuously. The processor is hot to the touch.

I thought it may have been the sensor wire on the cooling fan not connected properly so the mobo was thing that there was no fan, but the same happends with several other fans.

The power supply is OK in so far that it works my P4 478 perfectly. I have even tried adding keyboard, mouse and graphics card just in case it needed them but just the same.

Usually at this stage I would just keep swapping parts around until I found the offending one but as the processor, mobo and memory are my only parts I can't in this case. I don't know anyone else in Orkney who has this type of setup well enough to ask them to let me butcher there machine:)

So is there anything anyone could suggest - or perhaps send me up a quad core, P35 mobo and 4gb of memory to do my testing with - I promised i'll let you have them back;)

Seriously any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Sounds like a typical memory issue with the DS3. Try a single module and see if it POSTs, if it does, set the timing and voltage the RAMs rated for and put the other module back. If this fails you may need to get a 'standard' module that runs on 1.8v stock to POST and setup your Corsair RAM, had this problem with a lot of DS3 boards and non standard RAM (especially G.Skill) as i think it muddles up the latencies and voltage, i had a stick of Geil PC5300 CAS5 1.8v hanging about just for this lol. A BIOS update might solve this issue too (done with other memory of course).

Hi there

Thanks for the replies. This is the ram:

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)

800MHz RAM Speed, CAS 4-4-4-12 Timings, 1.8-2.2v VDIMM, Lifetime Warranty with Corsair

I have cleared the CMOS a couple of times. I'm also sure I've tried with the graphics card in but will defo try again this morning to make sure.

Hi there

After a good nights sleep followed what you all said and I have got it to boot. The problem is with only 1 stick of memory - doesn't matter which - so it looks as though the memory is OK?

Now I am going to try and setup the Corsair manually as Justintime has suggested and see how I go from there.

Will post later.

Hi there

Have tried the voltage changes but with no effect, but in the course of playing around with memory the following appears to be the case:

2042621777

It appears that anytime I have a memory module in slot 1 or 2 then it will not boot. Anything in slot 3 and 4 or both will boot. I have got it to boot with 2gb in slots 3 and 4 at stock voltages with no problem.

So it appears that slots 1 and 2 for memory on my secondhand mobo are the problem and I guess they are knackered:mad:

Teach me for buy of fleabay. Still if my conclusion is wrong can anyone let me know. MM here I come!

Thanks for all your help

Cheers

Hi

I have updated the BIOS to version F5 which is the latest stable release but no change - only slots three and four work. There is a beta F5F but not sure whether I want to use this.

I am going to check through the BIOS to makesure everything looks OK with memory settings of the computer. I shall try to increase the voltage to the memory to see if that works. The memoy modules are 1.8v.

Thanks for the help so far

What's the RMA procedure on Giga-byte boards as it is second-hand to me. Their site is very slow this afternoon. I guess it's back to the original supplier which I will not be able to do. Will give it one try at 0.4.

Thanks
