Which is the most sensible Nvidia to buy for me?

I currently have a Gainward GTX 660 GS that I am looking to upgrade. At first the GTX 1050 TI looked like a sensible upgrade as I don't really play much and the GTX 600 does what I want right now. What appealed about the 1050 Ti to me was a drop in power consumuption - from 140W to 75W.

Now I've spotted that there are GT 1030 out there in the wild, with a power consumption of only 30W. But I'm wondering if this is will end up being a performance drop.

I am prepared to spend about £150 and the GTX 1050 Ti seems slot nicely into this price range. GT 1030 are about £60 online.

I'd be grateful for any opinions please.

1050ti is able to play AAA games on 1080p in reasonable framerates ( high settings ) ....while the gt 1030 is aimed towards entry level build and you can play AAA games on tweak settings (low-medium settings)
Frame rate wise both on high settings 1080p: 1050ti 30fps to 55fps while 1030 2GB 14fps to 30fps

Don't bother is the 1030, it's only good for 4k playback. As a test I tried Sonic Mania on mine and it wasn't playable.

Avoid the 1030, it's not really for gaming - just for 4K playback.

You would do well to go with the 1050ti, it is exactly what you are looking for.

An alternative if you can stretch the budget another £30 and get really good framerate and last you a while would be the GTX 1060 mini, its power consumption is typically at 115 during gaming.

Just out of curiosity, what is the big attraction to the power draw figures? Do you realise that even 175W is so insignificant compared to other household appliances. I seen someone post details of running an overclocked PC and GPU drawing over 600W from the wall and measuring it with these new smart meters and it classified it as 'green' which is low usage. I see people going on about power usage here all the time and I just don't understand the obsession with it, aside from having an adequate PSU...

cost of electricity keeps on going up every year. it is something that will become more and more of a consideration for people. i know the cost of my electricity has doubled from last year to this year. it's more of a consideration at the budget end of the market which this is rather than the top end or mid range. his budget is £150 now people are telling to push for a £220 card which is on offer. usually £240+ which would be £100 over budget normally.

anyone who can only afford £150 on a card then i think power consumption would be a factor as it helps them save £20-£40 a year

Fair enough, I guess I never considered that sort of money spread over a year to be significant to anyone, regardless of their income, but perhaps it is to some...

Thanks for the replies all.

As mentioned above, it is partly due to energy prices constantly rising. But for me, I won't use a GTX 1060 to it's full potential and probably not even a GTX 1050 TI. Unless I find a game I like, then I don't really see any need for a 1060. So why waste my money on a 1060.

It seems like the GT 1030 might be a cut too far - I did fear this, but I wanted opinions from others first. These opinions confirmed my thoughts.

I remember when spending a few hundred on a graphic card felt almost astronomical. Now it seems to be acceptable to people. For me, it's a case of benefiting from technology - higher performance and lower power consumption with each upgrade.

You are doing something wrong if you doubled your power bill. i changed supplier and am slightly cheaper this year. You have to look around every time your current power company try's to hit you with higher energy costs. I would say my bills have changed very little in the 4 years i have been in this house.

what is your cost per kwh?

mine is like 13p. last year it was only 7p

I like low power draw cause there is less heat to dissipate and therefore less noise.
