Mooching... in your house
for home browsing, buying a new macbook is just too expensive... which windows variant (including the netbooks) would be best value for money?

would like to spend no more than £200-£250 ideally...

I second the above, we have them at work and they are second to none for portable speedy internet surfing... the inbuilt wireless isn't half bad either.

daft question then... why would i get an nc10 over an n210 (or n220) for similar money, isn't it a newer, better styled and specced, windows 7 version of the nc10?

Right... I got the N210 (appreciate the advice guys but couldn't see why on earth I would buy an older model when the N210 was only a few quid more...)

Anyway, great little machine :) - Gotta admit its still night and day from getting a new mac, it was no less than 45 minutes (!!!) before I was able to use the machine as it wanted to install all sorts of crap!

Was a bit worried about the speed at it was lets say far less than zippy, but once i did a fresh windows 7 install from usb its now nice and fast (no idea why they sell computers like that, its such a bad advertisement!)

Anyway, all happy now :)

(oh, and the residue under the stickers was a bitch to get off... who the hell wants stickers on their nice new netbook?? :D)

I got an N210 this week too, I'm gunna install 2Gb of RAM tonight and install Windows 7 Pro I think.

I hate the crappy background with Win 7 Starter :(

Fresh Windows 7 install + 2GB of ram + a nice fresh Google Chrome installation and its a completely different system :)

When I use the netbook it makes me seriously doubt the value for money that I got for my iPad

Just ordered my N210, been umming and ahhing about what to get and finally decided thanks to this post.
I'm thinking W7 Pro and Ubuntu :]

Why would you need ubuntu out of interest? what can it do that W7 can't?

I've only ever thought of linux as something to use as a server, or for very minimalist systems where buying an OS would be overkill...

It isn't really about what it can and can't do, its more about user preference. W7 is the best thing to come out of Microsoft since the bogged down splurge that was Vista. However, in terms of the opportunity to learn something new (sometimes its nice to have to look around and explore again!)
So as an educational experience its good to look around and have an idea with different OS', I used to sidestep around Linux so it'd be nice to understand what the hell is going on haha!

It also seems to feel a lot like OSX, which I found nice to use, but cannot stand apple fanboys and the whole inflated hardware prices (plus you can make Ubuntu look exactly like OSX if you really want.)
Also it comes with all the programs I could need for use with a netbook @ 600-700mb!
I'm actually doubting why i'd bother whacking W7 Ult/pro on it now, for its uses as a net browser/note taker. Damn you!

Something I would be interested in hearing back from you new owners is whether your battery life took a dive when you put a fresh W7 on?

Mine is certainly no longer anything like the quoted, maybe 4 hours 5 at max... Is there something I need to be installing maybe? I've put on the main drivers
