It seems I am not getting a good deal from Plusnet if what you guys say is anything to go by. So, if not Plusnet, who else?

My requirements:

1mbit ADSL (I can't get anything better here - I am on MaxDSL up to 8mbit and it syncs at about 964kbit)
15Gb of more bandwidth allowance per month with reasonable offpeak times where no limit exists . Currently anything I download between midnight and 6pm doesn't count towards me allowance
Little or no traffic shaping
Good pings for gaming

Thats actually it. I don't need anything more than this really. Although I am a heavy internet user I don't spend 24/7 downloading HD rips of movies simply becuase I can, so I don't need 200gb of downloads a month or anything like that.

Cheers!

I would recommend ADSL24, Home 30 or Office 15, I've been with them for over a year now

Home has free usage between 12am & 8am, Office between 8pm - 8am

I constantly get max speed from them. Pings are 28ms at best on a fast path.

Good pings for gaming = Virgin media (cable) does have traffic shaping thou unless you opt for 50mb which doesnt have any.

O2 or Be, if your exchange is LLU.

Sam Knows will tell you if your exchange has O2/Be LLU

Sign up using QuidCo (with O2) and you'll get a bit of cash-back, too!

This.

I would recommend O2 quite highly, above BT, Virgin Media and Sky. (In my experiences anyway over the last 7/8 years)

guys, the OP is on adslmax with a sync of 964kbps. even if o2/be was available on his exchange, they wouldn't touch a line like that with a barge pole. :p

+1 but I would go for http://www.ukfsn.org/ as the prices are cheaper than other Entanet resellers (or at least they were when I was looking)

If you are in an area with just adsl max (no llu) o2's access service is also quite good. No traffic shaping and good speeds throughout the day. It's £17 a month for us as we are on o2 or a fiver more if you are not.

It may be worth giving an Iplate a go to see if it could improve sync

IPlate looks good. But..

A good way to tell if your line is likely to benefit from bell wire filtering is to compare Broadband performance test results when the modem is plugged into the master socket, versus plugging it into an extension socket. If you see an improvement in broadband performance when the master socket is used, this is a good indication that an iPlate will help.

I already have my modem plugged into the master socket. Will it still help?

Probably not, have you disconected all the cables bar 2 & 5 in all your phone sockets?

Unless your paying too much for plusnet I can't see you getting much better on your line.

move house? :D

Can you link to the Samknows page for your exchange/give us the exchange code so we can look at all the options for your area?

It looks as though your line is too long to use any LLU even if they are available on your exchange, as said before in other posts look at samknows and see how far you are from the exchange and whats available to you. So if you are stuck using up to 8 meg max dsl I would seriously consider a good ISP that may improve ur low speeds and line sync, ZEN INTERNET or IDNET would be my choices, the only problem with these two ISP's is they do have monthly limits but thats why you get great speeds for the 50 - 60GB allowance you can use anytime.

How much do you transfer in the "free" off peak time, and how big a budget do you have?

There really should be a sticky to cover these sorts of threads :/

+1 Be are top banana. 8mb Download / 1.2mb Upload, Unlimited usage / no restrictions, nice low ping for gaming for £13.5Opm 1O out of 1O :)

edit: must remember to read all posts.

if you have an 02 mobile (or transfer to them/get a PAYG)...

£7.34 a month for their Upto 8Mb, with 2 months free and £50 cashback (quidco)

= £23.40 for the entire year!

Spend the rest on a hosting service of your choice..
