Sky contract is up, I've had no problems but what else is there? Ideally an ISP that has no barriers, so I want to be able to use my own router, no traffic shaping, no DNS filtering, and also unlimited data etc

I can only get FTTC (40mbps)

Thanks

This feels like it was written ten years ago. All ISP's have barriers, they are all subject to the same legal requirements thanks to the snoopers charter, so DNS is filtered, court ordered blocking is a thing, DNS requests are logged and retained/searchable by man+dog. As to the router point i'd suggest any router worth buying should support DHCP60/61, other than AA, I can't think of a single ISP offering a mainstream package that isn't unlimited, I know some offer a very limited free service to jobseekers and those on certain benefits with limitations, but this doesn't sound like what you're asking for.

Sky/Now or Plusnet/BT are the usual two suspects, it's just the same two companies behind each, use Quidco/TCB and see what offers the best deal including cash back.

I like Zen for the fixed IP address. They are starting to look quite expensive these days though.
